Jumping to ios 5.0.1

I have an 3rd gen iPod touch that has ios 4.1

I wanted to update to iOS 5.0.1 but in iTunes it wants to update to 4.2 first

I downloaded the 5.0.1 ipsw thinking I could restore but keep getting a firmware error

Do I really have to update in order or is there a trick to jumping that I'm not doing right?

You do on older stuff, bear with it, its worth it in the end.

Are you sure its a 3rd gen? If its an 8GB it isnt.

Yeah it's not 3rd gen. Found that out from it being 8gb

The first thing I did to figure out the generation was googling the model number mc086ll which returned results calling that the third gen but it is not

ios 5 is great, it is worth updating to ios 4 and then to ios 5, just do it!
