I have el capitan 10.11.2. I am using Mail 9.2. on the bottom left of mail I am seeing "downloading messages" (at this time 42 messages). I am assuming these are Junk Mail as I seem to getting valid e-mails in the normal way.

However whatever these emails are they are not showing up anywhere. The JUNK mailbox has a X on the icon and theres is nothing there.

on mail box preferences JUMK is showing Store on server (ticked) and Delete Never. on mail preferences I have enabled Junk Mail filtering etc.

However I cannot see these messages anywhere. Although I most certainly do not want junk mail I am curious as to what these message are? nothing in Trash either relating to messages I don't know about. Any ideas?

Hi Brian the download starts as soon as I open Mail. So just now when i logged on to my iMac and opened mail down at the bottom left it shows "downloading mail" and in this case reported 30 new messages. I have a few valid email in my accounts nothing in my Junk mail. I have two accounts one Apple and one from a local Uk supplier Virgin. A few days ago i went on to the Virgin Website to view my emails but didn't download anything. Incidentally my Mail program has been crashing quite frequently say once a week? Judging my all the threads i see everyone has been getting MORE junk mail while I am the reverse? Thanks for giving my problem some thought

I don't think the "Downloading Messages" number is something that I have a concise handle on. In other words, unless you're missing messages that you know you should be getting, receiving multiple copies of messages, or some other obvious issue then I'd ignore it.

On the other hand, Mail shouldn't be crashing. Hard to say what's causing yours so I guess more investigation is needed. You can start by, the next time Mail crashes, open Applications>Utilities>Console and check to see what was going on when it happened.

Thanks Brian As you say i don't think i am missing anything important. (unless i had the ticket for the 32 million that hasn't been claimed from the lottery!.) Thanks for the tip abut crashing Mail. Will use that next time it happens
