Just A Few Questions...

OK, after only using OS X Tiger for about 3 days, I still don't know alot of stuff...

I was just wondering if anyone knew the answers to these assorted questions: :p

How do you open CD-RW's to take out/add files at the same time? I really like using CDRW's as I can store our many family photos on them.

Which is a better word processor/suite, Appleworks or that Neo one (I forgot the name). I don't know whether I should download it or keep Appleworks.

I've been deleting programs simply by dragging their folder/icon to the trash, should I use an uninstalling program instead (such as?)?

Is there a really good, free program to keep my Mac running the same as it is now down the road?

Also, can one move widgets right onto the desktop?

Bob, simply dragging apps to the trash works fine. If the program comes with an uninstaller, you might as well use it, but most of the programs for mac are somewhat tidy. You might have a preference file left over if you simply drag to the trash, but the file is tiny and will come in handy if you ever reinstall the app later.

I'm not sure what you mean by keeping your Mac running the same? I use no utility programs and my computer works just fine. No virus, adware, defragger needed. I would NOT recommend Norton.

Widgets cannot be moved straight to the desktop. They must be on the dashboard. <---Wrong....see devilot76's post below (post #8)

By the way, I really liked Paint on my PC, what is the equavilant to it on OS X?

You can burn your family photo right from iPhoto.

Appleworks should be a much better word processor than NeoOffice IMO.

For OSX maintenance, you might choose a freeware such as Onyx or MacJanitor
 
Yeah, iPhoto will let you burn photos right from that program.

If programs come with an uninstaller (most don't) then use that, otherwise it's just drag and drop.

I don't have much experience with either office suite, I use Office:mac and it's great.

Mac's don't suffer the horrible slowdown that Microsoft Windows based PCs do, most of us don't really bother with too much maintenance, you may want to use the programs listed but honestly, the OS really takes care of itself.

I'm not entirely sure by what you mean by this first question, but I'll give it a try. When you have a CD in your Mac, it should pop up a CD icon on to your desktop. Then you should be able to open that up and add and remove stuff by dragging and dropping (Just make sure you're copying the files and not making shortcuts with little arrows on the icon). I'm actually not sure about "reburning" CDRW's, but I think you might have to go to Applications-Utilities-Disk Utilities and then erase it there. After that you should be able to burn it with that little icon in the finder window. If anyone knows an easier way/if this is even necessary.

I know someone has already answered this question about uninstalling, but the reason it works is because the App icon is actually a folder with all of the Apps necessary files in it. Since everything is in one place (unlike some other OS's) you can drag and drop.

I don't use utility programs such as MacJanitor, as they are unnecessary IMO. Many people do run them and I'm sure they work. What I do for maintenance is only two things once a month. First I calibrate the battery (if you have a i/power book). To do this, charge up the battery, then unplug it and let it run down until the warning message. Click OK and let it continue to run until it puts itself to sleep. Then charge it back up and you're good to go. I would also let the computer run overnight about once a month because OS X has its own maintenance scripts that it runs. I did hear that if you're running 10.4 Tiger, it does this automatically even if you sleep you're Mac at night, so you don't have to worry about it. Finally, I usually restart my computer about once a week, although this is not really necessary.
 
As for the word processor suite i must say MS Office it is the most compatible with PC's which is very important at this time (hopefully it wont be for long ;) )
