Just a rant about Apple QC on macbooks

Why can't apple hire more (or just hire if they don't have any) people to control the macbooks they send out? My machine has several faults on the exterior and has allready been in for repair one time;

There are several openings/holes on the sides, where the keyboard/mouse part meets the main part, here you can also press the plastic in from the side or from the keyboard part.

Same thing on the display part, but here you can only press inn, no cracks.

The bottom is not flush with the battery, one can feel the edge of the "frame" for the battery.

These things, except from the openings isn't very serious, but damn annoying.

I have a feeling these things are fairly common, so why don't apple do something about them?

Two reasons really:

1.) we the consumers are cheap, granted Apples are expensive, but still, we want everything as low in cost as possible, hence they have to cut elsewhere to keep this price down.

2.) Apple themselves wants $, just like any other company, and will cut down in certain areas to make sure they still can make a profit on something they have to sell for less than they desire.


At least, to me, thats what it all boils down too....

We want it all, but don't want to pay for it, and thats when QC goes away...

Yeah, mine does those too, so what? it doesn't effect use of the computer.

My old PB g4 12" had that as well (battery edge), now that I think about it..

Although the MBP 17" doesn't have that issue.. We'll see if my MB C2D does... Not that it would have me return it, but I'm curious if a lot of the complaints on the first run of the MB will be on the new version..

Maybe not, but it's pretty annoying, and it cut's the resale value (not that apple would care about that part ).

The spacing between the covers could also be entrance points for dust and moisture and other nasty things

Not sure if it'd really de-value the laptop, I guess it depend son how picky the buyer is, and how visable it is if you don't point it out.

By law i need to tell the buyer about all the problems i know of, or the buyer can return it to me when he/she find out about them.

And they are pretty easy to notice just by using the machine

But if Apple doesn't consider it a problem, neither can the buyer.

Not sure though it can be considered a problem... Its not really doing anything to the laptop, just small imperfections in the unit. But I understand what youre saying.

Anyways, you'll be keeping it forever until it dies, so no worries right?

I think Apple has grown a little too big for its briches (sp?). They probably are getting more orders for MBs and MBPs than they anticipated and therefore simply cannot QC them as much as they normally would. It could also be engineering problems. It could be the company building the machines. Who knows. All I know is they need to fix the problems.

If there is a hole in the Macbook so that dust can get inside the machine that is worth complaining about, I certainly would, the other issues aren't even worth mentioning, which is why I didn't quote your whole post, only the points where you are (IMO) making a fuss about nothing.

Be thankful that you can actually use a mouse with your machine without getting you hand blasted by hot air (unlike many PC laptops), thanks to the fact that the Macbook is actually designed

I was a little concerned given the horror stories that I might have trouble with the build quaility (so much so I ordered a stock black machine so I could swap out at an apple store easily) but it has to be said after a good look around that this has better build quality than the rev c and rev a powerbook 12s that the machine replaces.

Out of interest are people complaining about rev a (CD) or rev b (C2D) machine here? Black or white?

Sounds liek the CD model had some issues all around, the discoloring panels was a big one that made me wait until the C2D model...

It is my opinion that the C2D MBPs have improved quality control at least; I see less complaints than with the origional MBP's. It was only a matter of time before Apple realized that repairing them was costing them a lot of money and resources from thousands of customers risking them a seriously bad reputation. There was a time when you did not have to make an appointment to get Apple service; seems like that started when the new Macbooks and Macbook pros first came out. So I think Apple has learned it's lesson. If the new Macbook C2D's do not have better QC like the C2D MBP's I suspect they will very soon, due to Apple having more hassles in the repair department than they will admit. The dike has burst and I feel they are taking steps to avert their being drowned in repairs. Just my opinion. BTW I think my 2.33 stock 15" is fabulous, since it has no flaws. Can't wait to get home and play Oblivion; I just bought a horse, the paint black and white kind, (after being thrown in jail for stealing one!) and I am trotting around the countryside admiring a waterfall on a wooden swinging bridge, high in the mountains, where even the grass sways in the wind...unbelievable experience using the 3rd person perspective.

did you buy it new or refurbished?

bought a ibook refurbished 2 years ago and it came the same way espically the battery. I decided to take it apart completely and rebuild it better. once in side you really notice that the laptop was badly reassembled.afterwards it was very sturdy.


give it a shot if its refurbished, if not return it.
