I hate how in iMessage (it's always been this way) if you ever send someone a photo, video, gif, sticker, meme, etc. that you have previously sent to them, the phone re-uploads the file and sends it through again. On cell coverage it's a lot slower and more redundant than if iMessage noticed that you've sent something before and simply makes it pop up as new on the other person's device without actually having to transmit the file again.

Also, it takes up more storage when you are sending files twice.

This would basically force them to stop doing end to end encryption for iMessages which would be a very bad idea. I certainly see where you are coming from, but privacy is worth more than this feature imo.

I agree, you are correct and privacy is worth more.

When you send an iMessage your device has no idea what the other person's device has stored on it. Yes you may have previously sent the message but that doesn't mean the recipient still has the content on their device.

No it doesn’t. In the same way when sending someone a YouTube link, the device knows to turn the link into a pop up video in the message thread, you could do the same thing. The device could send code in a secure manner that tells the other device you are sending the media, and if the same media is still in their thread, to simply make it appear again as a new message. You could use the hash of the file to match it even.

Everything you just said defeats end to end encryption.

This. I am not a hoarder of text messages, they get cleared out shortly after I believe we are done. And I don't want the phone to keep stoopid animated gifs and such for future reference, just because someone likes to overdo their use of them.
