I had wait some time now for this day with new iMac's. For now I have 21.5 late 2012, 2.9 GHz, 8 GB Ram and 1 TB Fusion Drive.. Running Sierra and no Retina..

Now I like to take photos and I and I had a lot of dias/negatives from my late parents and I like to edit those old photos.
I stop working with all this that I think I might wait for new iMac to arrive since the screen should be a lot better than what I had now.

Should I stay away from the 21.5 4K and go for the base 27 5K and would that be good enough for the editing? I don't care about gaming etc..

With photography being your thing, if you have the physical space for it I’d be inclined to believe an upgrade to the larger 27” 5K panel would be very worthwhile. However if storage is a concern, the top end 21.5” lets you configure storage options whereas you can’t do that with the base model 27” and you’d have to spend an extra 200 to get the $1999 model. If you feel you would be okay with 256GB of internal storage, you can get the $1799 model and use external drives as necessary. Also, depending on how heavy your workload becomes down the road if you plan to keep the machine for years, the 27” lets you upgrade your RAM easily to improve performance.

There are tradeoffs depending on needs, wants, and usage, but long story short the 27” 5K panel is amazing because of the quality and larger real estate.

Thanks.
I wonder that they use the same graphiccard.. This should be powerful enough?

Get the 27".
You will never regret it.

Suggestion:
It looks like "the best value" is the "midrange" 27" with the 512gb SSD as standard equipment.
