Just bought a 20" iMac

So today, next to my MacBook, sits a 20" aluminum Penryn iMac. I bought it yesterday. It's the lowest end model but it will be good enough for me. The 20" screen is so much bigger than my MacBooks 13" screen. It just feels like there is more space to work with. Overall, I like the iMac.
One thing though, I could hear a small fan-like noise near the screen. Is this normal? It's like a fan spinning at low speed noise.

first off, congrats on the purchase.. i hope you like your iMAc as much as i loveeee mine.

secondly, yeah its true - the more screen space you have - the more productive you are.

lastly, i dunno what fan noise you're commenting on - i've never experienced this unless i'm ripping/burning a cd/dvd and that's just the super drive working..

Do you know any good color calibration profiles for the 20" iMac? The stock profile is not that good and I heard that you are not supposed to use Adobe RGB or any other profiles that Mac OS X comes with as a profile. It's not meant to be used as a display profile? Is this true?
 
I recently sold my Mac Mini and got the 20" lowend iMac. I originally asked when we bought it how much it was to upgrade the ram to 2Gb and they told me £99 so i decided to buy my own ram for £14 and install it myself.

It is a great machine and the noisiest thing about it is my USB HDD i have connected to it! :D

You will need to buy a hardware colorimeter. The Spyder Express works well and costs maybe about $70. Also you need to re-calibrate every month or so.

Yes, you need a display profile. But yu ned one made for your display, not some one else's display
I could send you a profile but it would not match your screen. Your screen does not even match itself from month to month. So it you are doing any kind of color critial work just buy the colorimeter. With those glosy screens you are best to turn off the room lights and calibrate at night. At least mack sure there is not light source that can "see" the screen

I still think the 20" screen is too big but I can deal with it. I can't imagine having a 24" iMac then.
Also, the speakers on the iMac are so loud. Even at half volume they are loud.
Overall, a good experience. :)
 
Unless you're doing graphics work that involves matching your screen colors exactly to print or video you don't really need anything external to calibrate your machine. You can use the Calibrate tool in display preferences to adjust the screen to suit you or use the adobe profile if you like the look. It won't hurt anything. Except for professional use color profiles are a matter of taste.

Congrats on your purchase! I did the reverse of what you did. I purchased my 20" iMac and then my Macbook a few months later. :)

You are going to love your iMac. It has plenty of power to do just about everything. I use mine to edit Hi-Def Video and play X-Plane. It runs great and does a much better job than my Windows PC ever did.

I know what you mean about the size of the screen. I looked at the 24" model but decided it was actually too big for my needs. Besides, it wouldn't fit on my desk. :)

I don't have my iMac yet but when I get one it will be a 20" because the 24" is too high as my wife has desk that has a upper shelf that is too low for the 24" buy about an inch. I've heard about The 20" inch screens and have been frequenting the Apple Store in my area scrutinizing the screens much to the ammusement of the store staff. They have several 20" and 24" iMacs side by side and I believe the 20" will be fine for my needs as I can't see anything wrong with them and I don't need the machine for any professional use. I'm just hoping for an upgrade to the video card on the 2.66ghz. My purchase will probably be around January/09.
 
Recently, I noticed my iMac's fans are always on quietly. Is this common amongst iMacs?
 
probably with student discount or with corporate discount. I know Bank of America gives 17% off hardware from apple.
