I just upgraded my 19" CRT to a beautiful 23" ACD last week. Will I regret it with the 24" iMac released today? Does this mean that the displays are next for a refresh or a size increase?

Well, the specs on them were just upped within the last month or so, and we're only talking about an inch...and zero pixels...if they are upgraded. So, will you regret it? Only you can answer that. *Should* you regret it? Probably not.

This has already been discussed in another thread. But according to iGary...

1920x1200 is an HD resolution so don't expect a change in resolution. Think about it though - wouldn't you rather have that resolution stretched over 23" rather than 24"? To me, the higher pixel density would be my preferred option...

I doubt Apple will ever release a 24" LCD... moving to 24" would mean giving up S-IPS technology and moving to S-PVA (like the Dell 2407.) Apple knows that S-IPS is a much better choice for graphics pros, and I can't see them letting down such an important portion of their user base.

my 2 cents

Could you explain the differences between S-IPS and S-PVA? I wasn't aware Apple and Dell used different display technologies

Is the ACD 30" S-IPS?

According to the link from the LCD post...

Apple Cinema Display 30 M9179 = 30 inch 16 ms S-IPS (LG.Philips LM300W01) panel.

Hi turtlebud,

Check your serialnumber at Apple's website if it is the new and improved version of the 23" ACD. There are still a lot of old ones out there. Also bought one this week and got an old one with the old specs and had to send it back unfortunately, still waiting for a new one to arrive. Couldn't tell from the outside, because there are no specs on the box or on the ACD, only by checking the serial number on Apple's website. I got a little bit suspicious when I saw a black sticker on the box saying that this device only works with a G4 or a G5. And the new ACD's are updated with the introduction of the Mac Pro.

Furthermore, you won't regret it!! It's a beautifull display and plenty of screen!

dreadnought, thanks for suggesting that I check - turns out that I do have an old one (I think). It said manufactured in late 2005. So apple will take it back and give me a new one with no hassle right? Would I be able to bring it into a apple store and get it replaced?

thanks again.

edit: okay, that was based on the apple support site by entering the serial number (2A631XXXXXX), however, checking the chipmunk site, it says
Model: M9178 Cinema Display HD 23 inch
Factory: 2A (China)code_to_number: 003 - W86044WXU2N

Production year: 2006
Production week: 31 (August)
Production number: 3 (within this week)

which leads me to believe that it is a new spec one. I will call applecare tomorrow just to be sure. now, what's the best way to check for dead pixels....
