Hi, people in the forum, I just purchased a new 160gb ipod classic (Not opened yet) i was wondering if this was a good idea or should i take it back and wait for the Ipod updates?

I do not want a touch/nano but would be annoyed if Apple redesigned a new classic with bigger screen. I'm only interested in a ipod classic I wanted to get it as i was told it would be discontinued by my friend, Please could some sensible people please give me some decent advice please as to what to do.

Thanks

It won't be discontinued this year, and I don't really see it ever going away unless the touch takes over everything. Though I do see it going to flash memory in a couple of years. This year it will probably be a larger capacity, same price, most likely a new User Interface, slightly larger screen, and possibly more features. The reason I say all of this is because the Classic has been the same for 3 years and needs new features and a redesign.

Thank you for the reply. So you think i should return it and hold back for the ipod event? or buy it o n the 1st of September and cover my back in case there is a refresh i can take it back for exchange if not i already have it.

I doubt they will ever add anything significant to the iPod classic except perhaps more storage. If you do return it and wait for the iPod event (which they're now saying may be in August), it would be to get more capacity.

In the future, I do expect Apple to phase out the Classic and maybe have an HD version of the Touch. Steve did say last year that there is a specific demographic of people (like you, I suppose) that really just want the largest capacity and that's it. Even if they discontinue it this year, it's likely you'll be able to get it "while supplies last" at a discount -- more reason to return it and wait.

I'm pretty excited about the 1.7" touch screen iPod nano. I have a iPod shuffle and while I like how small it is for exercise (I have mine waterproofed for swimming), I just sometimes really wish the thing had a screen.

I think the direction went last year by cramming so many features in the nano was a wrong move. Keep the nano as a dedicated music player and make it the best and smallest ever. Who watches video on a nano anyways? Never saw one person doing it.

As far as shooting video -- our phones do that well enough whether you have an iPhone or something else. If you want a dedicated video recorder, it should at least have good optical zoom, macro mode, etc. They should have put that stuff in the touch and made the nano really live up to it's name. I suspect they'll correct this error this year.

i hope the Classic is not discontinued, i would love to see a 500GB iPod Classic, with a larger screen and revamped interface (where i can put CoverFlow by Album not Artist) there is so much more that can be done with it - but yes, definitely return it and wait until later this year, check this website on a regular basis :)

I would definitely return it and just hold off for the next couple of weeks to see what the new lineup brings. Even if it's announced as discontinued, I'm sure Apple and resellers will sell off their remaining stock so you should still probably be able to get one in that case. I doubt current stock will just be trashed and disappear immediately upon a discontinuation notice.

Thank you all so much for your advice i really appreciate it.

As we don't know if the Classic will get anything different when the ipods are refreshed (as all i keep hearing is the Ipod Touch is the main Mp3 to get a major overhaul) i did want to keep it, but i will return it to the New Covent Garden shop in the morning and sit and wait for the update hope its not too long.

I Wanted to test out my new mac (21.5) and Ipod CLASSIC (not bought with btso) but guess that can wait few weeks.

If anyone has any information on what could happen with the classic example bigger screen etc please post in here or I will check this forum and macrumors front page also.

Once again thank you all for you help.

Until the iPod touch capacity jumps over the Classics then we have nothing to worry about.

I'd keep it. They might very well add a larger drive or improve battery life with new ones in September... or they might not. But I'd certainly use it now because theres not much they can really add to the Classic.

If you can wait, then wait.
I'm presuming you have no immediate need of the iPod from the tone of your post, and the 'not opened' part.
Depending what you want; worst case is there is no change, and you just waited a bit longer to find this out. Otherwise, you'll probably have the choice of an updated model, or a cheaper discontinued model.
