Hey! first off this is my first post here. I've been reading for a long time now but finally decided to register. I just bought a Macbook. white, 2.0, 1gig. I'm just wondering what kinds of things I need to look for when it arrives to make sure everything looks good. This is my first laptop. I'm also going to be selling my dual 1.8 desktop with 1 gig RAM. Its just too much computer for my needs and now I have the need for a portable. Is ebay a good place to sell it or should I just take it to a local computer place? These things are heavy so it would be hard to ship.

too early to ask... go to www.apple.com/support/ and find the discussion page, go to macbook section

soon you will see a lot of people whining there, and just simply find the most serious (if any) threads and follow their complains and see if you hav the same problem...

:D

someone pleaaaaasssee tell me i can upgrade the memory on the regular macbook without taking apart the entire thing? the apple memory is too expensive so i'm going to order more from crucial pretty soon... (maybe 2 gigs total)

I'm personally wondering about the upgradability of the HDD. I can get a HDD much cheaper from where I work and plop it in myself.

But that's the thing. I'd rather not lug around an external everywhere I go. I may go ahead and buy an external for videos and stuff, bu the main data I'd like to keep on the laptop.

Memory is normally user upgradable. I imagine it still will be. Harddrives will not be user accessable.

Cool, I'll pay whatever the fee is and the guys in the tech shop can help me out.

is it possible to get a harddrive and ask AppleStore guys to fix it, how much will that cost? (UK)

I bought the

2 Ghz White, with 1gb Mem & 80gb HD

I was going to get with 512mb and order 1gb piece from crucial, until I realised that it was 2x256mb pieces rather than 1 x 512 (and there's very little difference between 1gb and 1.25gb.)

I already have an intel 2ghz Imac so it's cool this will be one powerful little laptop even if it does have a GMA950..... Looks like I'll be gaming still on my imac or powermac.....

hey, why don't you just get the stock config and make it 2 gig from crucial??? there's no dual channel under 1.5g config.

i know it might look rediculous to put such hell lot of ram in a consumer laptop, but hey, honestly, if you don't do graphic render / 3D games, this thing run as fast as the macbook pro.

I don't want to flood the board with "I just bought a MacBook" advice questions, so I'll just post this here.

I want an external mouse and hard drive for my future MacBook (it's a white, 2.0Ghz, 1GB RAM). I read about the Mac mouses on the Apple Store reviews and everything is either extreme love or extreme hate. So, should I get one of those (Mighty Mouse, wireless) or get a third party?

Also, since I will be video editing, I need an external hard drive. Ideally something small and portable, but with at least 200GB of storage.

Actually, if you read the main MacBook thread, someone who bought one posted that the hard drive is very easy to upgrade. Just remove the battery, and the hard drive is directly underneath it... just pull a white tab, then remove a few screws from the metal cage over the hard drive.

try logitech s540, cheaper, much better to use, feels great...
only downside is its not bluetooth, but doesnt matter, radio got very strong reception

I personally love the mighty mouse. The scoll ball is amazing.

Apples memory isnt that expensive when you look at the configuration. If you buy third party stuff you are going to have to take out some of the Apple stuff to make space. You might buy for example an extra 1GB for say $50 but you will be taking out $25 worth of 256mb to free up a slot. Effectively making your 1GB stick $75. Sure you can sell the bit you take out but you wont get much. Its always best to get as much RAM as possible when you buy the machine. It is actually cheaper in the long run. ;)

Mighty Mouse and Iomega MiniMax 250GB is the way I went and they both work great.

Dont bother, the macbook now has user-upradability for the HDD. You pull out a 'cartridge' right under the battery, as if you were uprgading RAM. Look on the 40-42 pages of the 'Macbook is released' thread in the news discussion forum, a guy posted how to do it in big font.

Actually Ive just had a look at Apples memory options for a new macbook and they are a bit extortionate. 3rd party is probably the way to go.

i can assure you this is incorrect. just dont bother to do the math again.
by selling the original ram and max out by yourself, you safe at least 50%, and that's calculated on Crucial prices, which is slidely more expensive than other online sources.

Mem on crucial is desperate pricing lately. €165 per piece of 1gb ram. I actually upgraded my imac to 2gb with Apple because it was cheaper with EDU discount than crucial......

But what a big piss off is that it costs €310 to upgrade to 2gb with the macbookpro and yet Apple as €407 for 2gb with the MacBook.... ITs the same bloody ram apple ye conning basta***ds......
