Just bought a refurb iMac on the 24th... new models coming?!

I just bought a refurb 20" iMac and I am reading that new models are coming out very shortly?! How soon? What features will they include? What's the return policy on refurbished apple products? Will Apple offer even cheaper prices for 'obsolete' refurbished iMacs when the new models are released?

Nobody knows when they come, what they include or how much do they cost. Update can be tomorrow or after 6 months. You have 14 days to return it but there'll be 15% restocking fee in US. Previous generation Macs usually get a nice price cut when new ones come so you might save couple of hundreds

I recall MBP users who purchased their laptop a few weeks before the newest refresh were allowed to return their MBP for the latest model. i can promise you, there will always come something better or cheaper sooner or later ,it`s like with price reductions , you buy something today and tomorrow there will be a reduction in the price

so stop thinking about if`s or when`s and enjoy what you`ve got ,
as you don`t have a outdated system only because its not the newest highest spec on the market or is it?
a newer mac may come soon
at the moment there won`t come a revolution in performance or design thats something i can promise

the first imac g3 was a revolution in design and performance in a home computer all in one system , as it wasn`t just a square box ,that won`t happen again any time soon

thats why i bought the emac g4 , a lot of people said i should better buy that mac model or this mac model the next said another mac , but i `ve seen the emac , loved it and bought it , not because i could not afford a newer model , i just liked the fact : it stands out from the crowd or like someone somewhere has written :"looks like a imac g3 on steroids " i love the emac , thats why i bought it and it does what i ask it to do , maybe a bit slower then the newest quad core , but still ,it does the job

For what it's worth, I just called Apple about returning the new iMac i ordered about 2 weeks ago. I told the service rep that I "had reason to believe" there's a new iMac coming out very soon and that I'd like to return my purchase so I could invest in the "latest and greatest" model. The rep stated: "Sure you can return it, but there's a 10% restocking fee". I ultimately declined and said I'll just stick with what I got.

Apple reps don't know does new iMac exist or not, so they handled it as a normal return. Only if something is released, they may not charge the restocking fee

I strongly suspect we will see redesigned iMacs and probably an entry price on the 20" model down to $999 (or even less).

However, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be better than the iMac you already got.

How does apple do such a great job of keeping a lid on announcements? it seems in this day in age so many things are leaked and yet apple seems airtight. It's almost like they should teach a class to other businesses on how to keep things under wrap.

If you functioned on this theory of computer buying you'd never own a computer. Everytime you buy an electronic you're buying an obsolete product. hell, i'm planning on buying the new imac and we all know that they are designing for the next refresh already.

Either way i'm excited to join the mac family as the obsolescence in mac is far smaller than that of PC's as mac actually work after a month of use.

I would take the 10% restocking fee if it made sense! But you have to run the numbers and make sure you're coming out ahead.

Let's say you bought the imac for $1000. By returning it you're basically selling it back to for $900. You'd get $900 back to spend on a the new machine and you get your tax back if you paid tax on it.

The question now is let's say you don't return it. Can you flip it on Ebay for $900 after the refresh? If you think you can get more, then keep it and list on Ebay in 45 days right before the refreshed refurbs start hitting the channel. If you don't want to deal with Ebay then I say take the restocking fee hit. Also you won't get your tax back, so there's a loss there. I would say enjoy the luxury of having a choice of returning it (unlike early adopters who bought 6 months ago,) and return it so you don't have to deal with Ebay later.

Edit: I was looking at the Apple Store Online Policy and it says 14 days for returns?

I think there are so few people who knows about upcoming updates and new products and they get paid well (no need to tell things for money) and if they leak something, it can easily be tracked who leaked and then fire him.

The computers are made in China , right ? They can track in that far/deeply ? I doubt it .

Anyway , I've been vacillating and procrastinating for a year now but have decided to make the switch from PC to a new APPLE iMac 20" whatever it ends up being .

I'm a computer dummy so will no doubt be relying on you guys and gals for help when making the transition . I'm in the Japanese boondocks and the nearest genius bar is 2 and a half hours away by car !

I doubt it too, but I think the people there aren't very good at English and they may have professional confidentiality, so if they leak and get caught, you get fired and it isn't easy to get OK job in China. Moreover they might now even know what Apple is or what they are making, but many rumors have came from China, so they do know something

apple is usually pretty pushy in charging their restocking fee

luckily i was able to return my imac last yr and not lose out on the restocking fee

i returned the imac at the apple store and then filed a credit card dispute to get back the money i lost in the restocking fee

about a month later i got a letter saying i won the dispute and fully got all my money back

so id just return it, eat the restocking fee temporarily and then file a dispute with ur cc company

restocking fee's are bs policies by retailers who attempt to gain an upperhand on customers who have a change of heart. the legality though of restocking fee's is always iffy and with a good cc company you should have no problem winning

I'm also guessing that china is a whole new ball of wax. the culture there doesn't surround personal gain(ie dishing the dirt on the new apple), rather it's quite the opposite. We also need to remember that we can spout about history and personal integrity as a culture, but they likely are scared of personal harm by the gov or the company(not apple, the company who is hired to make the computers) if they do leak anything. I have a good feeling things are done a bit differently there.
