iPod Just bought a used ipod. what to use to rip the songs off it?

i just bought a used ipod and there are some songs on it that i want to keep.

when i connect it to itunes it tells me that i need to delete the songs on it for me to put new ones on.

how can i keep the old songs on the ipod and put new ones on?
is there software that is for free to rip the songs off it and put it on my pc?

please help me!!!
