I couldn't be bothered waiting for a online store delivery so I had a day trip to the Apple retail store! Mainly so I could see the 20" and 24" iMacs in the flesh!

Anyway I walked out of the store quite a bit lighter on the wallet and with a 20" 2.4 iMac in my hand!

I am in the UK and get Further Educational discount, the last time I bought my Mac Mini (online) through the standard education store I got a email a few months later saying I had got a 3 year warranty (Not support, but warranty if that makes sense?).

My question is will I get this warranty for the iMac or not? The guy in the store was trying to sell me the AppleCare but I didn't really want it as the 3 year parts and labour warranty would be fine. (And free!)

Finally if I wanted warranty support on this / exchange etc can I get this arranged online as I don't exactly live local to the store (Well I kinda do but not when I'm lugging a 20" iMac there and back!!)

Thanks :)

The way it is for us Brits and the education store:

If you buy it in the shop (use of Edu ID) or use the online store for education (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukInd) you dont get free 3 year limited applecare, but can buy applecare at a discounted price using the online store or in the shop (use of Edu ID.)

If you buy your mac using the Higher Education online store (http://apple.procureweb.ac.uk/) then you will get the free 3 year limited applecare.

You can check if your machine is covered for 3 years by visting: http://www.apple.com/support/ and inputting your hardware serial number in the box at the bottom left of the page.

Lets take the standard 20" 2.4ghz imac as a example:

Normal Price: £949.00
Education Store Price: £891.83
Higher Education Price: £835.43

There is also Further Education store by phone only, which i have no clue about.

If you buy in-store (brick and mortar) with HE discount = No free 3 yrs warranty but can get £58 AppleCare discount (which you should've jumped at IMO)

If you buy via the online HE store = Free 3 yr warranty as well as the option for £58 AppleCare discount.

HE discount is between 14-16% off
Standard Edu will probably be 6-8% off

The difference between the 3yr and AppleCare is:

AppleCare: 3 yr Parts and Labour as well as 3 yr Telephone support

Free 3 yr Warranty: 3 yr Parts and Labour as well as 1 yr Telephone support

Nope has to be accessed through a university network or producing ID at a store
