Hey, our windoze computer was messing up bad and its old, so I finally convinced my parents we should upgrade, and I also convinced them that getting a mac would be a good idea. So we were in the city today looking at different computers, and then we started looking at the macs, and they had a Imac 17in. So we bought it then and there... but i've read a lot about how theyre probably gonna be upping the proccesors soon... so was it a bad idea? I didn't want to try to get my mom to wait, but oh well. The other thing is, should we get apple care? We bought it at futureshop and they tried to sell us their extended warranty, but I thought apple care was supposed to be pretty good.

hey, i know how you feel. same thing happened to me. i just got the 20" iMac and i even made a similar post after i started reading about the new processors. I'm ok with it though, cuz i know that not everyone is going to go rushing to buy the new ones. i guess that makes me feel better cuz i wont be the only one with the current mac. anyways, you should definetly get apple care. thats something everyone shoud do if they get a mac.

Computers are always about to be upgraded soon, so don't worry about it. Think about how much better this computer is than your old machine. You made an excellent choice. More RAM makes a big difference, but if you just do basic things, and not do too much at once, you may not notice.
I second the Applecare vote. You might find store warranties that are better on hardware repair, but nothing beats the security you and your parents will get from the phone support. They are always there and very patient about walking you through any problem you may have. You can get Applecare more cheaply from lacomputercompany.com.
I also like the David Pogue's Missing Manual books. Explore and enjoy.

Yea, I would definitely get AppleCare. In my opinion it is a great thing to have and it give me piece of mind so if my iMac has a problem someday I can just call up Apple and either send it in or figure out what to do to fix it.
Same here. Luckily, my parents bought AppleCare for my iBook the first day. They thought just in case, since this computer is going to last me a long time. And I've used it already, although it was before the longer AppleCare kicked in. Get AppleCare. It might be $250, but it can save you possibly 10 times that.iShane said:

Up here in Vancouver, the local Mac dealer, Simply Computing, gives you a store credit if you buy the Apple Care and never use it. It's win-win... if you use the Apple Care, it was probably worth the money, and if you don't, well, you get your money back!
Also remember that your credit card probably extends the manufacturer's warranty by a year.

Bad Choice and here is why, they will be upgraded in the next month or two at most. Other then that iMac has grown up into a pretty nice machine.
I bought a mac mini in april, and shortly thereafter, heard about the new conroe and merom processors, that may or may not be put in the mini. I don't really care now, because while it may drop the resale value, i never even use that much of my processor anyway. The highest percentage i have ever seen my mini using was like 15% of its 1.66 Ghz, so i don't really need 2 Ghz or anything like that...
i'm holding off for WWDC and see what develops i'm praying their is an update, and ordering it ASAP....if not i have to decide to hold out or buy and get a free nano...
