So I just got back to my hotel from the apple store in houston.
i bought an iMac and a Macbook.


looking at the boxes, I just noticed something. The image of the macbook on the box has the leopard wallpaper. The iMac has the old blue tiger background.

Does this mean that Leopard is not preinstalled on the iMac and i'll have a CD inside?!

No idea, but that would be a good guess...congrats on the iMac and Macbook...I have the new iMac, and it is the best computer I have ever owned...I still have a Powerbook G4 that is doing well, I'll get a Macbook likely in about a year and a half.

All Macs purchased since Octoberish ship with Tiger pre-installed, and a Leopard drop-in DVD that will allow you to upgrade in your own time. It's in there. =)

MacBooks were released after Leopard. iMacs weren't.

Why people think Apple would go through their inventory, install an OS and then repackage every machine, I've no idea. It's enough of a resource hog just to slip in the new DVD, I'm sure!

Depends on where you got it. I ordered online from Apple and it shipped from Shanghai with Leopard installed. Got it last week.

Macbook come with leopard pre installed, iMac has Tiger with a Leopard (drop in) cd in the box.

My two systems came the exact same way.

Drop in disc takes ~30 minutes of your life to install. It's that easy. Personally, I think you've come out ahead compared to those folks getting Leopard pre-installed: you have 2 backup discs - one is Tiger.

I see a lot of posts from people fretting about not having Leopard preinstalled. Really, it's not that big a deal.

Yep, I'll affirm that.

I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and it took one hour, 100% problem free, no settings lost along the way. I then spent a few days tweaking the new settings to my satisfaction of course, but the upgrade was painless. I think people are used to Windows installations that require multiple reboots, finding drivers, lengthy delays as the registry gets checked/updated and so forth.

The ~30 mins for the install as noted above is even easier - my mentioning the legacy upgrade is just to demonstrate if that is painless, well, welcome to Mac world, where by no means is it perfect but when it comes to this kind of stuff - but it really is more stress free and fast in comparison.

Just be sure to update it since the latest Leopard release has fixes not included in the distribution disk, and that's painless as well.

I agree it's not a big deal. If it really bothers you and it is still sealed, ask Apple if you could swap them out.

However, think about it. You actually get 2 OS this way. Tiger and Leopard.
