So I bought my first iPhone. It's a 3G refurbished 16GB model. I got it for 99 bucks. What are some suggested apps that are must haves?

I know next to nothing about iPhones because I was not an early adopter.

Edit: I should mention that I am a long time Mac user though.

Just keep reading this site, do searches, and if you don't find the answers, then feel free to ask specific questions.

Congrats on your purchase. You're gonna love it.

As for apps, everybody loves Facebook!

I'd also recommend WhatsApp if you know a lot of people with iPhones. You can really cut down on your SMS usage with it.

I'm sure you've already started using it but I always put on a BSE shield after checking for software/hardware defects to keep it scratch free.

No kidding. Just browse the app store and you can try gobs of apps. A lot of times a lite ad supported version of the app will be available for free. gives you a good chance to see if you want it.

My must have apps:

MLB at bat 2009 $9.99
Shazam (find out what music is playing, simply amazing) / free
Movies by flixter (movie times, automatically lists theatres closeby /w gps) / free
Twitterific / Free
Remote (apple's free itunes controller) / free
Skype / free (must have account)
Pandora (free internet radio, amazing) / free
Wikipanion lite (great wiki app, free version just as good as paid imo and i have the paid) / free

if you have mobileme, the idisk app is handy

you can try mobileme free for 60 days and its $100 for a year, you can decide if you want it but its not necessary. I have it though and it comes in very handy and streamlines all your info with your computer.

YAY!!!! you're gonna L.O.V.E. it!

you'll find out a lot of things to do with your knew iphone on this site! just keep reading.... go back a bunch of pages and read! i'm a recent iphone person, too and now i'm hooked on this site (and my phone! how DID i live without it before????)

As others have said, just keep reading. I'm picking one up next week, and that's what I'm doing. But I already know quite a bit about the iPhone.

Must-have apps differ for everybody. Depends on what you need to get done and what your interests are.

What is a BSE shield?

Best Skins Ever (bestskinsever.com).

It's a clone of the Invisible Shield that cost about a third of what IS costs. It's a plastic coating that adheres to the screen and/or back of your phone and is practically indestructable. They use it to coat the leading edge of military helicoptor blades to prevent damage from flying debris.

Conclusion: It's damn resilient and it saves you from having to put a bulky case over your phone.

Your name is hilarious. I just noticed it.

Great suggestion. I've been thinking about getting the incipio feather case since I like low form factor.

You're exactly the type of person that should not be in a forum. If you don't have anything important to say, than don't say it.

I have the Feather case w/ the Invisible Shield. Best combo for scratch protection on the market.

As for the Feather, make sure you take your phone out every few weeks to clean the dust that gets in. I use a 3M Microfiber cloth to clean my screen / back plastic. Be careful removing the phone from the Feather case because the plastic by the volume switch is narrow and I cracked my first Feather because I wasn't careful enough.

I love my Invisible Shield. I baby my phone, but I still get micro scratches on the screen over time. I was tired of getting tiny scratches, so that's why I opted for an Invisible Shield. My friends have generic screen protectors and they are all terrible. I was lucky enough to have an Official Invisible Shield Booth at my mall, so I got it installed there. It really is a great screen protector and the warranty is superb. It's more expensive than other protectors, but to me, it's well worth it. Best Buy also installs the Invisible Shield, but they charge a bit more money. Either way, I would recommend getting it installed by someone who knows what they're doing, rather than frustrate yourself like many people who try to install it on their own.

As for the apps, these are some of my favorites to try:

Shazam
Home Run Battle 3D
Facebook / Myspace apps
Colorsplash
TMZ
Madden NFL 2010
Tiger Woods 2010
Movies
Discovery App
Units
Munch
Tipstar
Pageonce Assistant
ezimba
ESPN Scorecenter
AIM

Hehe that username is great...of course I can be easily amused!

Here are non-native apps that I use multiple times a day:

Beejive, all my IM's in one app
Facebook
AP News, the associated press' news app
Accuweather, weather app with lots of options, including radars and hourly forecasts.
Pandora
FStream, connect to any Internet radio feed
WifiTrack, much better than the native wifi finder

Jailbroken apps I use every day:

SBSetings
Backgrounder
illumine theme
5 icon dock
5 column springboard

There are of course tons of other regular and jailbroken apps but those are the first things I install.

"Must-have" apps:

AP Mobile News
Facebook
Any of a variety of Twitter apps (I have TweetDeck)
The Weather Channel
Gas Cubby (if you want to track mileage, expenses, etc.)
New York Times, USA Today, other news apps as your taste prefers
ScoreCenter
RSS reader (I use NetNewsWire)

After that, choose whatever games you like and other apps that pique your interest. Just look on here and in the App Store forum for good ideas and opinions.
