Just bought my new Mac mini I7..display problems still

I need some advice. Just purchased an I7 Mac Mini on Sunday. Updated it and i still have the HDMI issues. Yellows have greenish tint, text is fuzzy and overscan slider appears when I access the display.

I connected the HDMI to DVI adapter and a DVI cable. The color looks a little better and the over scan disappears but the text is still not as crispy as I think it should be.

I searched the forums for solutions but I am new to the Os and the interface and I could not get the ruby patch edid.rb solution to work.

I'm using a HP 25BW 25" monitor. Nice monitor, I guess. Don't really know yet. It's 1920 x 1080.

I decided to order a Dell u2412M to try it. The Dell does not have an HDMI port, but it is 1920 x 1200 instead. Better resolution. A lot of folks in the forums recommend this monitor. Does HDMI become moot at this point?

So my problem is, do I keep the mini? The Hdmi port issue is not resolved. Will it ever be? How long till its fixed?

I love the expandability of the mini. (Ram, Drives)

Do I just use the TB port with a DVI adapter and hope they fix the HDMI so when I want that second monitor everything will work okay?

The Dell monitor may help with the text issues, right?

Bottom line, I hate to buy something new that doesn't work right. But by the same token I realize with computers updates and fixes happen. I counting on Apple to remedy this in a timely manner.

If I return everything, I will probably buy a Imac 27" I5. At least i can expand the ram. But I will have to purchase the fusion drive. This set up is not my first choice. (The price point on the mini is great.)

What do you guys think?

Like tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions of users around the world have done...You just bought your new late-2012 Mac Mini. My advice before jumping to conclusions is to...

1) Relax.

2) Take a deep breath.

3) Take another deep breath... and give yourself a few days to think this through while you give Apple support a chance to hear the issues you are having and as you read suggestions from this forum. Chances are that there is a solution waiting to be applied.

You mentioned that you are considering taking the new i7 Mini back and getting yourself a 27" i5 iMac because you believe your new Mini has HDMI display issues?

Why not just purchase an Apple Thunderbolt 27" monitor to go with the new i7 Mini if you really wanted to use only an Apple display?

4) Think this through.

5) If all else fails in the next days or next week...you still have the option to A) exchange the Mini and try another one, B) trade the Mini in for the iMac or other model.

It seems that the 10.8.3 update has fixed the display issues for a majority of users. HDMI display issues can be the result of much more than just problems with the source machine's the video signal. The HDMI standard has been changing in recent years and this can be the source of many of these problems. Cabling, cables converting the signal, monitor synching, your monitor's or HDTVs backwards compatibility and display synch issues with new and old HDMI standards on different equipment, etc.. . can all be potential causes of problems.

As an example... every now and then I used to get display color problems (strange tinting of one or more colors, etc.), lines through the screen, black screens, freezing, snow, sound problems and image lock ups on my PS3 when connected to my 2005 Sony CRT (tube) HDTV via HDMI cable and it always required a hard reboot of the PS3 and a power cycle of that Sony CRT HDTV to get it to work again. I purchased a new Samsung 46" LED HDTV panel about two months ago and haven't had a single problem while using my same PS3 connected via HDMI since then...not even once. I can't speak from hands on experience about the new Mini until I get my new late-2012 Mini in a day or two. I will finally be to fully evaluate this model and any potential issues it has or doesn't have in the next week.

I have been happily using my mid level '12 mini with the U2412. I use a MDP running through the TB out. No issues whatsoever for my usage. The display is gorgeous to my aging eyes and just the right native resolution.

I am an AV enthusiast and have experienced the ins and outs of HDMI since the beginning. It is the home theater standard but can be finicky and unreliable. This is what the movie industry has pushed down to us, so we use it. Believe me, we are hoping for something better.

That being said, you are right to expect everything to work right out of the box...all electronics should be plug n play (which is what Apple has always strived for). Try the suggested troubleshooting and see if you can get your setup going. If not, you do have time to return everything.

Thanks for the info on HDMI. I had no idea that this hardware/port had compatibility issues with signals etc.

I have been trying to make a decision about buying a mac for a few months. I finally bit the bullet and let the display issue get to me. (It was a pretty strong green tint) I'm taking your advice and breathing deeply.

I actual did consider a Thunderbolt display, but I want the new thinner profile that the Imac's have. It's not available yet. Hopefully, it will be available in the next few months. Wishful thinking..maybe.

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad the dell monitor worked out for you. I can't wait to receive mine. Hopefully, by the end of this week. I only have a 15 day return window with Best Buy. So I have to make my decisions rather quickly.

In the meantime, I will play with my mini and get used to the interface. I do enjoy the lightening quick speed. Way faster than any of the PC's I've used.

The solution is easy.

DON'T use the HDMI port for video if it's giving you problems.

Instead, get a new cable and use the MiniDisplayPort (Thunderbolt port) instead.

Do this, and your problems will be solved.

Yes, you will have to get another cable. Accept this.

It looks like the Dell has a Displayport on the back. If so, I suggest you try a MiniDisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable as your connection.

Do this, and get back to us as to how it looks...

Bad luck for me. There is no improvement. It makes no difference with my mini. When I use the Mini Display port to HDMI I get the same color and font issues, and the over scan slider appears in display settings.

So, my new dell is coming today. (no hdmi port on this monitor) I have one more adapter to go. The TB to DVI dongle. Keep your fingers crossed.

I'll keep you posted.

NO!!!! There is no need to use a dongle. As stated, above the Dell 2412 has a displayport. All you need is a mini-displayport to displayport cable. Thunderbolt is a mini-displayport port. You don't have to mess with a dongle to convert from Mini-displayport/thunderbolt to another connector. You get to use it in all it's native displayport glory.

Returned my HP 25bw monitor as soon as I hooked up my Dell U2412m. Nice resolution and great adjustments with the stand. The color is off still. But not to bad. I'm still using the hdmi adaptor to dvi port.

My TB to Display port adapter should be in a couple of days. I will let you know how it looks as soon as I hook it up and evaluate.

Honestly it sounds like your doing something wrong. There's a setting somewhere that isn't right or hasn't been adjusted. I work tomorrow 10am-9pm CST gimme a call
