What exactly is the purpose of the rubbery layer on the joint of macbook pros?

Does it cover anything important? Just curious about it...cause I am a n00b:eek:

The logical point in it is if the alu went all the way over you would have sharp edges where you could cust your self. Now I for one would not want my laptop to slice me open when I use it. :)

Ah...so sharp point in the joint? Nm then.

I really want to find a way to make this thing as cool as possible...longevity is what I'm looking for with mine. (Besides the Koolsink, which I do not use on my lap cause that is DUMB!)
