Well, why not?

I've now completed upgrading a 4 core 2013 MP.

In:

3.3 GHz E5-2667 V2 8 core Xeon;
64 GB Crucial RAM;
1 TB OWC Aura.

Needless to say, it's MUCH faster (save the storage, where I don't think the Aura matches the stock Apple 256 GB part).

Having had the MP apart, it really is amazing to see how it works and how beautifully engineered it is. So I can allow Apple some slack for releasing it. But that still doesn't excuse Apple for not updating it for so long. And it strikes me as a splendid failure even more after seeing how it is put together.

Ah well - a fun project!

nice :D thats a super nice upgrade and the E5-2667 V2 are much much cheaper now, im watching them dreaming of a hack to replace my 5.1

Well done, a bit of a shame you went with the Aura instead of upgrading to HS and doing the Sintech NVMe adapter with Samsung SSD. You have the same CPU and RAM as I do and it’s great - you will be very happy with it.

Next on your to-do list is an eGPU ;)

Might have to send the Aura back - getting VDH 02 errors. It was $350 used, so I figured what the heck.

If I do, I'll run with your suggestion. It's purely for fun, so downtimefor swaps is tolerable.

Just make sure you upgrade to HS first before swapping to a NVMe drive

And . . . have to send it back to OWC. Getting the dreaded "dumpGPUrestart" line over and over. I've requested a straight exchange - just have to send it back with the RMA.
