Hey guys i just got my 2.8 imac couple days ago but i have a question Ive always left my computers on 24/7 but with the imac it just gets really hot in there with the display and all so i was wondering what do you guys do?? Do you guys leave your imacs on all the time or do you shut them off every night.. In the energy saver options i set the option to NEVER shut the computer off and NEVER put the hard disks to sleep. is this okay? or am i just too worried bout my new baby?

Unless the computer actually does something while you sleep there's no reason to keep it running right? Do the environment a favor and put it to sleep or turn it off.

Powering down the HDD when it's not in use is a good thing. There is only a slight delay when the HDD starts up again.
Setting it to sleep after a certain period of inactivity is also a good thing. Remember, it doesn't go to sleep if you are playing music and movies or downloading something.

I have a 2.4Ghz 20" iMac and I do one of two things:

1. If I need the machine to do something overnight (eg, download something, encode video) I just turn the brightness to zero (screen stays on) and leave it. My screensaver comes on in 5 mins, then the screen turns off after 10 (as set in the energy saver system preference).

2. If I don't need it to do anything, I just touch the power button on the back when I'm done for the night. This puts the iMac to sleep. You could do the same by going Apple menu > Sleep, but the one-touch power button sleep is very convenient!
