I just wanted to let everyone know who has not yet personally seen the new Mcabook Pro with the LED screens that they are in one word AWESOME!

I was over to our local Apple store today to stop in and pick up an Airport Extreme router. I wanted to get this prior to my new MBP getting here on Wednesday. I have read quite a few posts about finicky wireless on them with other brand routers and having encryption enabled so I did not want to take a chance on having the same problems connecting. Anyway, while I was there I stopped and looked at the new MBP with the LED and was floored with the quality I saw. I am extremely happy I chose the glossy now that I have seen it first hand. Although the non glossy looked pretty good too. I just like the easier to read and better color on the glossy myself, I know this is a personal preference but wanted to post that I have seen them both first hand and whichever you choose you will be quite happy I am sure.

Aside from my awe looking at the screen, it was my first time ever trying OSX. I did not know anything about using it and just started messing around with it. I figured out a few basic things fairly quickly but will need some time to get familiar with it. I loved the taskbar with the growing icons when you mouse over them and jump around when launched. Pretty slick. The machine itself was actually far better quality in person than I was truly expecting to see. The look and feel of the machine was outstanding. I now feel as if I made the right choice in buying one sight unseen. Although I am more anxious to get it now that I have touched one already :)

Another thing I thought was quite good was the Applestore employee I spoke to at the counter who was very pleasant and knowledgable. He had a very good conversation with me when I explained my prior PC experience and that this was my first Apple product. Alot of my questions he answered quickly and effectively with a great positive attitude. I have to say I was very impressed. So I picked up the Airport N and left the store feeling quite good about my recent purchase and my first experience with Apple.

Anyhow, I just thought I would share my experience today with those who may be interested.

BTW... While I was browsing the store I overheard again and agai, alot of people asking the experts there, what they expected to hear about Mondays big Apple event. Well what I overheard them telling the customers that the all pretty much expected the big news to be imac related. I did not get the feeling there was going to be much more than that in the way of hardware from their comments.

I used to work at the Apple Store... I'll tell you one thing... they have NO inside information. So any of their comments are just guesses. And technically, they're not supposed to say anything anyway.

I would recommend you go back on a Saturday morning. They have "getting started with Mac" classes. You can also go to apple.com/retail and choose your store. There's an online calendar of free workshops.

Glad to hear you had a good experience there. Most people thought the stores would flop when they first opened them over 5 years ago.... now they're the retail store to look to when it comes to growth. Crazy.

Oh, BTW, don't call it a taskbar. It's a dock. :)

Thanks for the comments and educating me on the proper term for what in Windows is called a taskbar. You'll have to forgive me for that but I did not know what it was called under OSX. I have alot to learn so I am excited in exploring all of it.

The matte screens are that bad eh... bugger... that is what I ordered.

I don't think that's what he said. Don't worry, the matte screens are gorgeous! Not the kind of saturation of the glossy, but still gorgeous. Reflection is overrated!

No, I said that the non glossy looked pretty good too. I just personally preferred the glossy. Both were very nice regardless of what your chose. The one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb to me, was the difference between the non LED screens on the 17" and the previous gen 15s. They had them next to the new LED ones and it was instantly apparent which type you would want regardless of glossy or non.

Personally, I can't stand the glossy screens. They annoy me to no end.

Its a personal preference just like anything else. Some love them some hate them. I like both but to my eyes the glossy just looks better and easier to see. I don't think anyone truly cares for the reflections on them, but you can't have it all. Anyway whatever you prefer is good for you.

Thanks for the info - I'm glad the new screens are so obviously better than on the last generation of MBP's. Makes me really glad I waited as long as I have done to take the plunge :)

Such Rave reviews make me want to go see an LED Macbook Pro for myself.
They seem to be quite the spectacle around the pro community.

Yup, I've seen one myself here at the local Mac retailer. It look amazing. I ordered the glossy screen, but I've only seen the matt version so far, and it really looks great.

They're really in a different league compared to the old ones. Having said that, I'm not sure if that says much. They're as good similarly priced PC laptops now...maybe even better than some.

Pro tips UI-wise:

Shrink the dock. It gives you more playable space without worrying about showing it when you're scrolling. Oh, and two finger scrolling is seriously sexy. Command+H to hide a window is probably one of the best things ever.
Get used to recognising the difference between Cmd+W (close window) & Cmd+Q (quit program completely). I often like to keep Safari/GranParadiso in RAM so I can bring them up quickly, and the same goes for iTunes. Alt+E, and then pressing a letter will give you the accented version of that character. It's superficial, really, but a nice touch. Also, set Expose to activate on the bottom left & right corners of your screen. A quick flick to the left or right to show all your windows is easier than a keypress! Fn+delete gives you reverse backspace btw, if you haven't figured that out yet.

Basically, go Google "OS X hotkeys" and/or open the System Prefs > Keyboard & Mouse screen and see what's available as bindings. You'll be pleasantly surprised if it's your first Mac; I still was finding out new bindings and features a few months after I got my first Mac in April last year.

Excellent tips which I truly appreciate! Thanks for all your advice. It is a very strange thing for me to be this green with technology with regard to how much experience I have on the other side of the fence. Although it is exciting to think of all the exploring and discovery ahead of me with OSX.

Well I honestly have no experience with macbook pros or OSX, but PC / Linux laptops in general I have tons. Having been a big fan of Thinkpads due to their designs and quality, I have to say my initial impressions of the MBP today, was my being really impressed with the quality and design. Of course as time goes on and I get more experience with the MBP, I will know more on its quality but thus far I would have to say it is far superior to most on the market. I am really excited about getting mine.

I was referring to the displays on pre-LED Macbook pros which, for many of us, were simply of unacceptable quality. IF you get a 'good' (well- assembled with non-faulty components) MBP, the quality is excellent - but general quality control has not been very good in the past few years.

My new MBP is simply superb. I can notice that the lower part of the display is slightly less bright so that whites are ever so slightly less white than further up, but other than that it is essentially perfect. Hardly visible. Very very satisfied.

I didn't realize there were quality issues with previous MBP gens. I sure hope I get a winner.

The consumer reports article a few of months back on laptops basically said Apple was pretty average for problems. I think Acer was singled out as being unusually bad, but that might be my memory...

The iMac did have fewest problems, I do remember that.

I have the 2.33GHz MBP. I compared it the other day with the new 2.4GHz 15" at the apple store, and honestly, aside from being a little brighter, I didn't see much of a difference, at least not enough to justify an upgrade.

I got that issue... CR said Apple laptop's reliability is "undistinguished", while Apple Desktops were Top notch.

If I am not mistaken, isn't it the same chinese manufacturer (Compal) building the MBP as the Dell laptops and a few other brands? There are only about 3 or so actual manufacturers of laptops out there for most brands.
