So I've only had my Apple TV for a few hours and played around with it. Able to sync with my iTunes is cool.

I rented a standard movie and it worked flawlessly. I think Apple is smart in going with internet downloads. Sony might have won the HD format war but I do not think this will be a Beta vs. VHS battle. Most people are happy with the quality of movies on regular DVDs and Apple HD's download (while not the best HD quality) is worthy enough for people to be satisfied. I think Apple TV will get traction soon.

Youtube was a fun feature, especially when you are bored on the couch.

I'm very happy with my purchase. I got the 160GB version, not sure if I even need this much space since the device had a USB slot to add more space but more hard drive space is always better for future protection.

I just wished Costco was selling Apple TV V2....I think they were selling V1 for under $200 a while back but I haven't seen it online at costco.com or in store.

Now, I have nothing more to buy from Apple. I am truly all Apple hardware out. Got the iMac, Macbook, iPhone, Mac Mini, Apple TV. Is there anything left to buy? Mac Pro is not even in the picture for me! I'll just have to wait for iPhone V2 whenever it comes out.

The usb slot is not able to add external drives for more space, if that's what you mean.

But is doesn't matter anyway because you can just stream to the Atv from a computer with 50 billion drives connected to/inside it anyway.

Well first there is always something you can buy at Apple but you may not need it. :)

I received an ATV for my birthday. It was more like here's the credit card go buy yourself something. I too got the 160gb version but that is because I wasn't sure if I was going to stream or store. If anything I always have the choice. At 40gb I am not sure storing will always be a great option. Even at 160 it can certainly fill up fast.

That said, I too enjoy the ATV for what it is and always wish it will turn into A DVR somehow with nothing more than a software update.

Rentals are great but I admit I don't rent many. this place will tell you what 99 cent rental is out this week. It's good to know in the event you want to experiment with more standard def rentals.

In my experience Apple did well with this and while I don't know I would want to pony up the cash on my own before I got it, I can see now if I didn't have it I would be bummed and would buy another.

also....

You aren't completely done with buying Apple hardware yet! :D Missing an iPod shuffle for exercise (or a Nano with the Nike sport kit). Wouldn't want to use an iPhone for this....

Apple TV Take 2 is the same as Take 1 hardware wise - all you need to do is a software update.

Remember to run the update wizard, latest version is 2.02.

I forgot but I do have the iPod nano version 2 (the previous edition) I am skipping this currentgeneration cause I simply have no need for video since I have the iPhone. I gave away my iPod shuffle cause I also had no need.

I am bummed that you cannot add more hard drive via USB. However you can always stream iTunes from computer so they makes up the difference.

Yeah, I did notice the hardware is the same as apple tv(itV) that was released last year.

Trust me, soon you'll be very very happy you went with 160. Soon after that you'll wish they had something much larger. And not long after that you might even wish you went with the 40gig and saved that extra cash for an external drive to hook to your Mac/PC that will house your iTunes videos from which you'll just stream to :apple:TV.

At least that's just me, ripping DVDs became an addiction and my video library is approaching 200 gigs and I only got the :apple:TV a few weeks ago.

Good luck!

I heartily agree on both counts. I bought the 160 gig version so that I could store movies on it. I already have about 30 movies stored there and have not yet used up half its storage space.

I have also succumbed to the DVD ripping addiction. I have been gratified by the PQ of the MP4 files I have created from my movie DVDs when displayed on my Apple TV. They look just as good to my eye as the original DVDs had when I watched them on my upconverting Momitsu DVD player, which is to say, they look very good indeed. I am now trying to decide whether to buy a 1 gig Time Capsule of a 1 gig WD FireWire 800 drive for less than half the price of the Time Capsule. One way or the other, I’m going to have to do something soon.

I'm in the same boat, soon my external 300gig drive will be filled up (60 gigs is music) and am looking to just go with a terabyte drive which should hopefully be adequate for at least a year or so (don't have THAT many DVDs). I'm kinda looking at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136100

And evenutally throw another terabyte drive in there when the prices drop as I haven't been very good when it comes to backups

Time Capsule is pretty sexy though and it would be nice to upgrade from my 3 yr old $40 Linksys. Not to mention going "n".
