hi guys!!! i just got my first macbook in the mail yesterday, but i have yet to start it up, as i was doing other things, and i'm trying to make sure every little detail is taken care of in my mac launch.
to start with, i'm not "switching" to mac, but instead a switch hitter (baseball term in refrence to a hitter that swings from both sides of the bat), as i continue to use my windows xp desktop for several uses. i first decided on a mac six months ago when looking for a notebook computer for my college graduation, as the power surges we get on a regular basis here in south florida may be taking a toll on my desktop and just plain annoying (graduated satruday after just seven semesters), and lurked on the forums since summer. i first waited for core 2 duo and leapord to come out before buying my macbook, but since leapoard wasn't out till spring, i decided to order it last week with my student discount along with 2 mb of ram based on the advice given here. my family is all pc and windows oriented and were resentful to buying me a mac at first, but i lucked out and got some cash of my own and bought it with my own money.
about six months ago, i asked elsewhere if a vista computer or xp computer was better for me, but after doing some further digging, i found that vista wasn't going to be a vast improvement, and likely to be lots of bloat and just messy after being years late, you know the rest. coupled with that was that xp (which i think is the best os ms has made to date) could be rendered to relvative obsltencess at anytime. i don't have too much against ms as a compnay, but they aren't nice, and lately, their os has been doing too many errors, i couldn't find any good programs for web and movies, etc like i wanted to do. then i stumbled on the i'm a mac ads. i just loved them, and after that, i wanted to see if macs were a decent third option. they were a great third option, with most of the reviews being very postive, and over the next couple of weeks, i just wanted to have one. so i waited for core 2 duo on the macbook, the computer i wanted, as the pros seemed a bit big for my taste and plus out of my price range (if there was a 12 inch mbp, apple could have put me in a pickle). i try out the apples for the next few months, and get some free apps to supply my coming mac.
i will mainly use this for the main ilife proprites, prehaps moving on later to the higher end apps. i think also gettng a mac will benefit come resume time, as i can claim to have proficency in two os' instead of just one that most of my compteitors do. btw, i graduated with a bs in biology, but not looking for a job quite yet. i'm not ditching windows, but vista isn't getting within 10 feet of my computers.
i wanted to really post this before starting up the mac for the first time to tell you guys the news, and see if i'm missing anything major on mac setup that's not covered elsewhere (i've read a bunch of beginner's guides). i got most of the vital apps and some fun ones i like. i hope to have the mac basicaly set up by the end of the year.
