Just got my first Mac

Hello everyone,

I purchased an iPhone after playing with one in the apple store in July. Before that my only Apple product was a 5G iPod (which i hate, i don't like the clickwheel).

Using the iPhone kinda got me interested in OSX. So after much debate I bought a 2.4Ghz 15" MBP. It arrived yesterday and i'm still playing with it.

Just thought i'd say hi.

So far my main issue is this warped lid not closing all the way, for 2500 dollars you'd think this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm going to swing by the store today and compare it to their models. I bought it off of amazon so i won't be getting the 14 day exchange anyways.
 
Take a photo.

If it doesn't close by a few mm's, then stop whining - mine doesn't close completely and perfectly level, there is a slight gap.

Do I care? No.

Sounds selfish complaining about it not closing fully (leaving a very small gap) when there is a much greater list of problems out there you could have had.

Just be thankful you don't have yellow tint.
 
Congrats on the new purchase. I think it's a good idea for you to take it to the Apple Store and compare, it couldn't hurt, eh? Plus, they may give you a replacement if it is unacceptable! Good luck.:)

I'm supposed to "be thankful" that a product I spent thousands of dollars on isn't defective? What is that?

It's probably a 2 - 3mm gap on the right side while the left side is fairly "flush".

I also don't recall whining, why are you so confrontational? I'm just looking for some discussion.

Thanks for the input on yours being crooked though, from what i hear it's "semi-normal." Meaning it shouldn't be like that (obviously) but it tends to be.

I would expect a $300 laptop to close properly, let alone one that cost thousands. The guy is entitled to be unhappy.

Okay, go on. Take it back to Apple.

I'll just laugh at you when you get a laptop with a yellow tint and then try to exchange that one and end up running into a whole load of problems.

I don't see how it having a very small gap be defective. Does it affect how you use it? No. You are just being fussy.

Trust me, you are much better keeping it than returning it and possibily getting one with a yellow tint.
 
But if you bought it from amazon, you can't technically complain at an Applestore can you?:confused:

Ah.. I think this problem is because apple laptops are designed to look very sleek.. My sis' Dell leaves a 5m gap and the normal latch looks terrible. The latch less designs really cause you to notice small defects.. ;)

Actually, if Apple moved the latched to the edges instead of in the middle, they would hold down the lid edge-to-edge, thereby removing the warp.

And how exactly would you open it?

You'd ruin the design if you had the latch going across the base of the case, otherwise you'd end up having two latches to open the lid.

It's just a bunch of magnets right? I'm sure you could just pull them apart?:eek:

One button could move a "lever" for both latches. Or just put two magnets on the outside.

I went to the apple store and most of the display models had gaps somewhere. It really was quite sad. Everyone had a gap somewhere, some worse than others and all in different places.

I got a week 37 build with the LG screen and everything else in order. Amazon had just got some new ones in when i ordered mine.
 
I wasn't trying to sound angry - was more of a mere reflection of some peoples desire for perfection (excuse the poetic language).

You have a perfect MBP - a slight gap isn't much to complain about really; the gap isn't huge nor noticable from standing up. It doesn't affect how the machine operates or how it looks when you are actually using it.

There is people on this forum who still are trying to find a laptop that doesn't have the yellow tint issue and would jump at the chance to get a perfect MBP like yours.

What time did your shipping status change? I've been checking it every 15 minutes. :) It's supposed to ship today but it's 4PM and the status still has not changed.

That sucks.

I hate it when you pay for overnight shipping (uh, because you want it overnight) and they say the order was in late, or the credit card burped, or the shipping clerk had to go to the doctors...

If I order FedEx, overnight, P1, I absolutely, positively expect it to be here overnight. I want my order to go to the top of the stack.

Unfortunately, all too often, priority doesn't mean priority.

I'm sure there are, either issue shouldn't exist though to be honest.

It's a very expensive machine made of nice aluminum, not cheap plastic. This is part of why people want "perfect" i suppose.

After seeing them all like that at the mac store i'll stick with it, unless it drives me nuts :)

Maybe i'll just sit on it :p

If everything else about it is fine, then deciding to keep it could be much less hassle than returning and so on. I had a similar issue, and I decided it was minor enough to correct with:

I've never noticed any gap since, and while I now have six small rubbery dots around my screen it turns out that I don't notice them either.

It's possible that returning it could have given me a flawless machine, but it's also possible that I a new machine could have had a dead pixel or two which I consider harder to ignore.

Mine has gotten better with age. Maybe heat over time?

I have a 17" so if yo think you can see bowing on a 15", imagine the extra 1" on each side.

It doesn't effect the performance (or is that "affect"? ...never could figure that out) and I only notice it when my MBP is closed...

So I leave it open and use it as much as I can! Problem solved! :D

Ah!

I forgot to mention above... I still use the Trojan-thin foam that came between the keyboard and the screen. I have never closed the top without it.

I had a Dell that somehow had the screen meet the keys and scratched the screen. Really pissed me off. So now I always use whatever is shipped to me when I receive a computer.
