just got my macbook

Hey everyone, I just got my macbook today and even though i know it might be a little premature to write about how amazing it is on the first day, I just thought i might allay the fears of any who are fearfully clicking on these boards like twnety times a day trying to figure out whether the reported problems outweigh the burning desire to own one of these puppies.

anyway, mine's a week 29, white 1.83 macbook with 1GB ram and 120 GB harddrive and it's blazing fast, not that hot (or maybe I have a high heat tolerance, but i doubt it) and basically the absolute love of my life at the moment. you know, if inanimate objects can be loves of lives.

at the moment, all the pieces are where they should be, it looks beautiful, the sound quality is what i expected, it is mooless, whineless, and fine temperature-wise. it doesn't stall, even when running microsoft office.

and all this from a switcher who has never owned or extensively used a mac in her life.

ooh actually the only complaint i have is the the edge of the macbook really IS sharp. i didn't notice it even after i read others complaining because when you test it at the apple store, you're standing up so your wrists/forearms aren't actually pressed against the edge but when you're sitting and your arms are actually sitting on the edge, it actually does cut into your wrist a bit and it's uncomfortable.

not a deal-breaker though.

Nice to hear a good MB story for a change. Hope you get years to come from your new machine and hope you stick around here at MR.

But personally, I was disappointed that you weren't giving a glowing review for a MBP though... ;)


(In the market soonish for one and am compelled to read everything I can about them.)

haha sorry, the small cuteness and generally pretty-factor of the white macbook got me ;)

Hey congradulations that it's defect free.

No one who has a defect free notebook makes threads telling us that, people only make threads when things are broken.

I'm still not convinced tho that the quality is up to snuff, but I'm glad you have something that suits your needs perfectly!

not to put a damper on your parade, but are you really sure it's whine-less? I've yet to find a single macbook that doesn't whine. Some have it more, some have it less, but of the many that I've listened to, every single one does it. My theory is that some people just can't hear noises that high-pitched...

I was in the apple store yesterday and out of 8 macbooks only 1 was whining. Just to let everyone know. And yes I put my ear down to it to listen.

well, it's possible that I just haven't heard it whine YET :p I'm only on Day 2 of this baby. So far the only sounds I've heard are the noises it makes when I put in disks-- the little whirr and ....the chkk(?) noise (you can tell how computer-savvy I am). I'm just hoping not to get the moo. That would render this useless for taking notes during lecture...

and i mentioned it just as a side thing before, but the sharp edge actually really hurtsafter a while since it keeps pressing on the same spot so now there is just a spot on my forearms/wrists that is really tender and sore.

That's extremely surprising to me. I've been in quite a few apple stores since the MBs were released and always make a point of listening to the MBs for a whine. Every single one, bar none, has had it. As have both macbook I've owned, and every other one I've seen.

I just don't believe it when people say they've seen ones that don't whine because I've stood next to people, both of us listening to the same macbook, and had them tell me there was no whine when I could hear it loud and clear. I think some people just can't hear it (to which I say, good for you! I wish I couldn't hear it either!).

Also, if a macbook has any USB or bluetooth mice or keyboards (and probably other peripherals), that will stop the whine. As will having photobooth or the mirror widget open.

FWIW, this second macbook (a replacement that I got yesterday) didn't whine for several hours after I got it. I was amazed... but then the whine showed up. Oh well.

Edit: Oh, and I think the moo is on every macbook too. All the "moo" consists of is the fans cycling on and off when the macbook reaches a certain temperature range. This is controlled by the firmware, which is exactly the same on every macbook. So how could this problem exist on some macbooks but not others? Because the loudness of the fans varies greatly, probably due to slight differences in how things got put together during manufacturing. On my old macbook, it was quite easy to hear the mooing. On this macbook, the fans do exactly the same cycling at 66-69 C, but they are so quiet that I have to put my ear right up to the macbook to hear it. Sure, it still sounds like a moo, but not one you could ever hear without trying to.

My week 22 MacBook doesn't whine (nor moo or get excessively hot or <insert FUD here>)... at all...

And I hear (or rather sense) fairly high pitch sounds...

I've been wrong in the past... once or twice. ;) But I'll just say, I'll stand by my above post, and my belief in the universality of MB whining unless and until I actually see one that doesn't for myself. :)

But kudos to those who don't have it/can't hear it/don't notice it because I'd sure like to be in your position!

Hi everyone..
I'm on my second 2 Ghz MacBook. The first one was beginning to show signs of discoloration AND was starting to moo, whine, and overheat. Concerned about the heat issue, I went and bought a simple Targus Cooling Pad that props it up so it can breathe, and that stopped the overheating. I decided to try to take it back anyway because there was no reason for the staining. Luckily, my local Apple Store replaced my MacBook with a new one, even though I had bought it more than two weeks prior to that date. I am so happy now.. but I wish I didn't have to exchange, period.

Whether or not this MacBook whines is beyond me. Hey, it probably does, but I'd rather not know.. it'd drive me crazy.:eek:

well, i got a macbook 3 weeks ago and i can honestly say it doesn't whine or moo... its basically the "perfect"? macbook... well, so far... i'm pretty sure of this because my mom got herself one yesterday and it mooed... i was gonna take it back but after having done some research here and finding out that half or 90% of macbooks have this kind of problem, i decided it wasn
t worth the hassle... it wasn't really noticable til i put my ear right next to the keyboard...

I noticed that my mackbook starts whining when I have it laying on a soft surface and the air can't circulate ... Other than that I am REALLY happy with my Macbook (3 week!). Everything is as expected. Need to add that I am a switcher from PC laptops to Apple 'Notebook' (note the discreet difference, due to the heating issue ;-))) I am truly amazed by the speed of the Apple Macbook (2 Ghz, 1GB RAM). It is a must have for everybody, especially PC laptop owners!

Ever since I got my iCurve stand, I've had substantially less noise out of the machine, and I can touch it!

Everything's just peachy.

hm, i've tried but i can't hear anything... i hope that means i don't have inferior hearing since i'm a singer :p also, even though the macbook does get a little too warm to rest fully on my lap because of the upper left corner of the MB, i've found that I can still use it comfortable by putting the right side on my right thigh and just supporting the left side edge with my left. which sounds complicated but its not, really, and quite comfortabe.

the only thing that i'm a bit 'eh' about is the sharp wrist-edge but it's definitely not a deal breaker and i'll get used to the marks on my forearms i guess...

My MacBook has been a joy too, minus a slight bit of uneven lightning from the backlight. It's very livable and minor. Tabitha (am I the only one who names their computer?) has no mooing, whining, or any other symptoms people have mentioned, and I've been using her heavily for over the past week.

The edges don't seem sharp to me. I did learn to adjust my typing style when using the MacBook just so my hands don't rest on top of the case. My hands would get warm and sticky when they touched the case for too long. Actually, by using correct typing posture, I've noticed it's much easier to type on the MacBook keyboard than it was previously.

I love my MacBook. I can't imagine a better little machine, even if she does have a minor flaw. /shrug
