I just got my C2D. Really excited about it. Can anyone recommend some software for the following:

Instant Messaging (AIM)
BitTorrent
Any other apps that you recommend or perhaps a listing (here or elsewhere) of popular (free) mac apps

Sorry if this has been asked about before.

Most people seem to swear by Adium for AIM as well as xtorrent. Personally i use Opera for my torrent needs and use yahoo and msn messengers since both are now universal.
You might also want Appdelete. This essentiall uninstalls apps you no longer want or installed on error.

Enjoy your mac

You'll need an app. called flip4mac to stream video from certain sites like cnn.com and such. The video on those sites is designed to play through WMP and flip4mac allows the video to play through Quicktime.

Also, I like to know the temps of my notebook so I installed CoreDuoTemp.

And, iPodBackup is pretty cool if you have a video iPod and want to backup your data in your home folder to your iPod.

Thanks for the answers, guys! I found a thread in another folder and also downloaded azureus and adium. I'll check out some of the others soon.

I also switched from Windows to Mac 1 year ago. Here are the " mac version" of some Windows softwares:

Toast Titanium 7.1= Nero Burning Rom
Adium (all in one instant messenger aim, icq, msn, yahoo etc)
Audacity (if you want to edit mp3s)
Flip4mac= Windows Media Player
Mactheripper=copy dvd
NeoOffice=Microsoft Office (Neo Office is much better than the Microsft Office 2004 bc it is universal binary)
real player=real player

hi, i'm a long time mac user, just thought this link might be helpful for new mac users.

http://www.opensourcemac.org/

its a great list of (obviously) opensource/free high-quality mac apps.

adium is amazing, especially if you have more than one AIM account or various other IM services. However, iChat (which comes with your mac) is pretty damn good, especially after installing chax (http://www.ksuther.com/chax/) which will give it tabbed message windows, among other things.

as far as torrents go, I highly highly recommend transmission (although azureus is good for more power users). I suggest getting the beta of transmission from here: http://chucker.mystfans.com/opensource/transmission/

just scroll to the bottom and get Transmission-0.7-svn-r993.dmg

I've been using it for weeks and it hasn't given me any problems.

hope you enjoy your new MBP! and let me know if you have any other software needs.

Transmission is my favorite BitTorrent app! It works great and it's a snazzy looking program. A few trackers have banned Transmission for some reason, so I use Tomato when I encounter those.

Also check out Transmit if you want an awesome FTP application! :D Transmit is shareware though.

web development tools?

That link to the open source mac is great! Thanks!

What would you all recommend for essential web developer tools? I'm sure there are a lot of web developers here - - what do you use?
I'm interested in free software, but if something is really great, I'm willing to pay. Any recommendations?

I dind't want to make a new thread so I'll be asking here :

-What is THE p2p software for Mac??

-If I have windows installed on my mbp c2d via bootcamp do I need to be careful when surfing online on MacOSX less my windows partition gets infected?

Is there a safeway to have Windows on my MBP?I'll be installing it just so I can play videogames.

I use Azureus for my bittorent client.

No, if you're in Mac OS X then your windows partition cannont get infected

With no internet surfing/emails on windows then you should be ok, but you'll want the firewall on and continue to update windows if you are even connected to the internet.
