Well my old one had trackpad issues and i was offered and replacement. Only waited 2 weeks. Well i guess i got really lucky as my old one had a Samsung LCD and my new one is LG~!!!!

Now comes the interesting part: I looked at About my mac at my super drive and noticed something interesting: it says HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N

Maybe they stoped using the old drive and maybe it will be easier for a region free drive? What does everyone think?

Hmmm, if it is the MB one does it make the MB sound upon start up/wake up or the MBP sound? (MB sound is like: duhduh... duhduh, MBP sound is like: weeooo)

I think my MPB optical drive sound is different now, maybe for the last few weeks or so. I seem to remember something on updater about the superdrive around the time it changed sounds.

It's much more quiet now on start up. Anyone else?

Just got a replacement, and it sounds different too....
not sure how to describe it, I guess, it doesnt sound as "smooth" as my previous one did, its more of a harsh, grinding sound. Did I get a new drive like the OP?

It calls to mind that toy with the pull-string, "the cow goes...moo! the macbook goes...moo!"

I just got my 4th MacBook Pro today and noticed the SuperDrive made an odd fart-like sound when I put the OS X disks in and then really vibrated loads more than normal. Checked the System Profiler and I too have this 'new' superdrive model: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N

I just found out that i also have one of these drives. And guess what the ax burning speed is 4x! I can put up with the noise but this is simply out of spec...it takes me like 14min just to burn a dvd compared to 9min on my first Macbook pro SR.

You should use compatible media?

4X is the max on the Dual Layers... that's right.
just make sure you are using the right media.
cheers,

Hi there,

I experienced the same problem with my 1st SR MBP, strong vibration with disks. It can read disk fine but with lots noise and vibration issues. You really have to make sure the drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N) is working properly since that one does everything except burning the DL-DVD (hardware prob), and the apple product specialist over the phone was giving me a hard time about replacing it (come on...its brand new out of the box...).

I took it back to the place that i purchased and showed the tech support about the vibration and he convinced the manager to swap me a new machine in the store.

My 2nd one is good (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N), and i am enjoying the new MBP every single minute.

cheers,
howard

cheers,

Im using the right media guys. I have single layered DVD's branded Nashua and RICOH 16x. The Drive is definately slower than my the one on my first macbook pro. Toast reads 4x max. The 8x option isnt even mentioned in the menus. Its either that or the programs i use to burn media dont recognize it well and take full advantage of the drivers capbility. Or its just busted!

How do you find out what SuperDrive model you have?

Never mind. I think this is it: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:

Mine is a week 28 build. When did they change it?
