The Girlfriend just gave me an Apple TV for an early Crimmus gift. I really want to open it, but I want to know if there's a pending update in January. Any advice?

If the Apple TV gets updated in January, it will most likely be a hard drive size bump and/or software update. Any software update will likely be made available to Apple TV 1.x owners.

The software update is likely to upgrade the Apple TV at minimum to the Leopard kernel and underpinnings (Core Animation, etc).

Eventually, I expect to see the 160GB Apple TV replace the 40GB model as the standard configuration.

Thanks. It's the 160GB and I went ahead and opened it. Problem is, iTunes won't pick it up in the devices area. I can't get it to sync.

You have to go to Sources, and add a new itunes library to it (Sources on the AppleTV). A number will pop up and you put that into iTunes (in the devices section) Pretty simple. The instructions would help :)

No, I'm there. The number pops up on my tv, but apple tv doesn't appear on iTunes under devices. My ipod and phone do when they're hooked up, but Apple TV doesn't. And it's hooked up to the same network. There's some flaw somewhere.

Make sure you are not connected to internet using a proxy server...I scratched my head for sometime until I figured it out

You might need to pop around in the iTunes sidebar a bit -- click "Music," then "Movies," etc. I just reset my Apple TV today and had to agitate iTunes a bit to see it.
