Just got power mac need help

Ok I just got my power Mac and I have a lot of question before put it together. I want the transition from PC to Mac to go smoothly and would like suggestions. What I want to do is to do video editing with Final Cut Pro transfer my e-mail, Microsoft Office outlook or outlook express address book, and all of My Documents files to the Mac. I have a few questions.

1.How or what software or hardware can I use to transfer my address book, my web favorites, and My Document files?

2.On the Mac what is the best way to do backups? Backup software if so what do you suggests? Should I look into .Mac? I am going to be using an external hard drive fire wire. How well 800 fire wire works?

I will be using and external serial raid Hard Drive for my video files. I also will be purchasing Microsoft office for Mac.

3. Firefox or Safari RSS for Web Browse?

4. Outlook or Mail or other to handle e-mail?

5. IPhoto or Photo shop Elements?

6. How much memory to add? I was thinking 2gig.

7. I do not have the super drive is there a upgrade for the Mac?

I would appreciate any other suggestion or recomendations.

1) If you use IE then you just export all your favourites to an HTML file and then Safari can import from that. You can use TinkerTool (just google for it) to enable the debug menu in Safari that will allow you to do the import.

2) I find .Mac is rubbish for backups. It's slow and doesn't have much space (1GB). Also, the backup program for it is pretty bad. I recommend either Synchronize Pro (http://www.qdea.com/pages/pages-syncx/syncx1.html) or Dejá Vu (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/dejavu.html).

The *best* way to backup is undoubtdely to create a mobile account synched with OS X server on another machine. However, that of course requires another machine and a copy of Server.

Firewire 800 works great but you're best off getting a Firewire 400 drive. It'll be more than fast enough for regular backups and is much much cheaper than 800.

3) Try both and see which one you like best.

4) Outlook doesn't exist for Macs. MS make Entourage which is similar. I'd avoid it though cause it plain out sucks. I'd recommend Mail. Even if your mail is stored on an MS Exchange mail server Apples Mail.app can read it anyway.

5) Huh?

6) 1GB is plenty for average users. If you do a substantial amount of work on your machine on big apps then yeah go for 2GB. Memory's so cheap now anyway.

7) For a PowerMac? Yes there is.

The Power Mac was a used unit but everything is new was build in early 05

Yes! before the duel layer. It is a CD DVD RW but not duel layer.

The term "superdrive" does not refer to a dual layer burner, but rather a DVD burner of any sort. Of course they made PowerMacs without superdrives for many years, but I'm assuming you were asking about a PowerMac G5 without a superdrive. We aren't really sure if the PowerMac in question is a G5 or not, but I don't think there was ever a PowerMac G5 that lacked a superdrive.

3. Whatever you prefer, try them both out and see.


5. iPhoto is more of a photo libary where you can do simple editing, whereas Elements is more on the editing side (..I think). It depends whether you just need a nice piece of software to store photos, or something a bit more on the editing line. I assume it came with iPhoto, if so give it a try, and then from there see whether you require anything else.

We aren't really sure if the PowerMac in question is a G5 or not, but I don't think there was ever a PowerMac G5 that lacked a superdrive.

It was a BTO option. Replacing the Superdrive with a combo drive reduced the price by about £150. When I bought mine 18 months ago I remember reading about someone on here who did that. He then bought an internal DVD burner (which had higher specs than Apple's own ones) and a case and swapped the 2. Hey presto a free Apple certified external CD burner.
