Just got the new 17" MBP (screen concerns)

Hey everyone,

this is my first post here (though I've been lurking about for a long time). As the topic says I just got the new MBP and this machine is a thing of beauty. However my concern is this: at the bottom of the screen there is an area of approx. 10-15 pixels where it is considerably lighter than the rest of the screen. This area stretches along the entire bottom of the screen.

I went and looked at the local Apple retailer to see if this was perhaps only on my machine. But the machine in the store had the same "problem".

Anyone else have this on their machine as well?

I'm not sure if I'm too picky. But I spent quite a fair amount of money on my MBP...

Welcome Kim!

Even if the floor model has the same issue it never hurts to get an exchange [for nearly $3,000 you cannot be too picky]. And if that doesn't work try the 15" the LED is superb.

My 17" has the same issue. Same with the one on the floor I saw. After looking harder at my Macbook that I've been using for quite a while now, it also has that line. For some reason its easier to notice on this 17" HiRes screen. To me, and others, the line is actually a darker line a few mm above the bottom. My guess is it has something to do with the way the screen is installed/mounted in the case. Perhaps some pressure put on it.

Either way, I would say if you can't live with it, swap it. My bet is the next one will also have that, but it may not be as bad, or may be worse. Mine is worse than the floor model I saw but I had already returned 2 15" LED MBP's because of all of the horrible screen issues I had with those (yellow, flickering).

This screen is a thing of beauty. Sure, the backlighting may not be as evenly lit... but colors are much more spot on. No flickering. Higher resolution.

Well I guess it's not the end of the world and I certainly don't want to replace it with another that might be even worse.

I'll try it out over the weekend and make a decision on monday.

I have the same thing...I think it's so far out of the normal range of focus when you're using the screen that it's not that big of a deal. Seems like a mounting thing, like someone else said. Not sure if you're going to get much better, assuming you have no dead pixels.

I also noticed this on mine, and at first it seemed as though the screen was horribly unevenly lit. When I move about, the lighting of the screen changes. I think on mine it's more of a position of where I am as opposed to anything else.

A common problem with the 17"s

The only way it'll be fixed to perfection is when 17" LED backlighting is available, then you'll need sunglasses to use it.

I don;'t think Apple is using subpar displays. I mean, they're industry standard from well-know manufacturers (LG in the case of the 17" MBP). The only common denominator is Apple - do all these issues have to do with the design of the display bezel? It has never made sense to me that HP and other store brands are able to include gorgeous, sharp, evenly illuminated 12-17" displays in their cheapo computers. Just check out any of the 17" laptop displays at best buy to see what I mean...or check out ANY PC laptop at a store!

The only explanation I can think of (besides Apple actually buying the cheapest, reject- displays) is that something about the thin design is giving rise to all the problems people are seeing. A uniform Bright or dark strip at the bottom of a display is not normal - slight light bleeding is.

I do, but it's not very pronounced at all. The screen actually looks great to me. The biggest problematic spot is up at the top where a little spot is a bit darker. Maybe when I get home I'll try to photograph it for ya.

A snapshot would be great. I tried before with the camera on my mobile. That picture came out great, the stripe didn't show at all

I don't seem to have this described stripe on my High-Res 17" MBP (or at least it's not noticeable). But I do notice VERY SLIGHT fading of brightness at the two bottom corners. They are just slightly darker or dimmer when viewed against a white or light background. Does anyone else have this problem or is it common?

EDIT: Nevermind. The dim corners have disappeared for some reason. I assume the backlight just wasn't completely warmed up. All is perfect again!
