I got the Agua version and I'm on the newest version of Snow Leopard. I would post a screen shot if I knew how to. But when I open OpenOffice in Applications you get the start screen where you usually get to choose between the different programs. First of all on the text "Welcome to openoffice", the bottom half of "Welcome to" is missing. And then all the icons below are kind of stacked onto each other so you can only access some of them, and its impossible to see what the icons does, cause the text for them also run into each other. whats up??

It sounds like you could have a problem with the font cache. There are a number of free- and shareware tools to clear the cache, like Onyx. The Snow Leopard version is still in beta, though.

You should obtain NEOOffice which is openoffice based but built for the Macintosh.

Before version 3.0, OpenOffice ran only under the XServer in MacOS, looking and behaving very un-apple-ish. NeoOffice at this time offered a native Mac look-and-feel, which many people preferred. As OO supports Aqua natively now, this difference is mostly history. One reason to use NO is maybe that OO's aqua interface is still a bit buggy (your problem could be an example). The disadvantage of NO is that it is usually behind the current development status, so you might miss some features from the current OO release.
As for your mangled fonts, the only idea that I have left to re-install OO or try to download the latest developer version. If you'd like to use NeoOffice instead, it is free software, you don't have to pay any money (look for the 3.0 download on the page).
Also, consider buying iWork. I've heard that it's much less buggy that OpenOffice (not sure about neoOffice). It also has this gorgeous full screen mode that, last I checked, OO and MS Office lack. It's not too expensive for office software, either. If you shop around you can get it for $50 or less.
