i just installed Windows 7 and WMware Fusion,
What other precautions and things do i have to do
to make a smooth install ?

Any other little Windows apps that are essential ?
I am purely a Mac user, so i don't know much about Windows....

thanks !

You need a pdf reader.I think adobe reader 9 is compatible. If you have a lot of .mov files, quicktime is the next download. Next you need to download flash for your browser from adobe. This should cover all popular files.

What are you trying to do with it?

Personally when I commission a new windows machine I install the following:
1) AntiVirus
2) WinRAR
3) (if web connected) FireFox
- that's about it for "always install no matter what". Beyond that, for me, it really depends what you're trying to do.

These days, I always immediately install the following on Windows machines:

ZoneAlarm Free
AVG Free
Firefox
Windows Live Essentials (Mail, Outlook Connector, Photo Gallery, Writer)
Pidgin
Adobe Reader/Flash
iTunes

I'm sure you already know this, but you won't be able to get Aero in VMWare. That's the reason I deleted my virtual machine and went ahead and created a Boot Camp partition for Windows 7. It's much nicer having all of the capabilities of the OS. And although it'll never happen, I wish there was a Mac version of Windows Live Mail. Out of all the free mail apps out there (WLM, Thunderbird, Apple Mail), I love that one the most.

Smile at yourself for getting it installed and working.

Now delete it as it's just a worse way of doing absolutely everything.

:p

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I never installed any Anti Virus software on my Vista Machine. Windows Firewall + the Firewall on my router stopped most of the junk. I would just install AVG once a month, scan, and uninstall, never found anything.

I can honestly say that Windows (not XP, just Vista and 7) has come an extremely long way in security.

You might want to download Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Mail etc. Microsoft removed all this so they could boast a lower installation size  (Prove me wrong, but I can't see any other reason why they did it). All of the apps are now on the Microsoft website, great Microsoft, even less functionality out of the box, and those with slow Internet speeds or download limits are screwed.

I agree. I don't use AV on my W7 machine either. I don't visit dodgy websites and I don't download dodgy torrents etc. Never had a virus on my home machine . . . ever.

No worries :)

By the way, I'm interested in Windows 7 as well (not as much as OS X, clearly :p), do you have to pay to get the beta that was released?
There's a release candidate coming out in he new few weeks which will be available to everyone and will reportedly only expire in June 2010.
