Hey guys,

I was playing some paper football on the iPhone 3G (post 2.0.1 update), and suddenly the sound went kaput. I've tried turning the silence/ring switch on and off, resetting it, etc... Nothing's working.

Should I just send it to the nearest Apple Store and let them look at it?

Yep. Problem is, all sounds work when I plug in the headphones. It's when I take the headphones out is there a problem with no sound. It's as if it still thinks the headphones are in there. I've tried resetting it with the headphones in and resetting with the headphones out. I'm currently on hold with Apple iPhone Customer Service. I'll see what that does.

Weird. Hopefully Apple can help.

I certainly hope so. I got it on opening day, so I'm still within the 30 days. Another 4 days. I might just go the nearest Apple Store and ask them about it.

Try using a spray air can or q-tip and clean out the headphone jack. There have been a lot of posts on here where some dirt gets into the headphone jack and so the iPhone thinks the headphones are always plugged in.

If the sounds is working on the headphones, then this is probably your problem.

Either clean it out yourself or take it to the Apple store and they'll do it for you.

Currently at the Apple Store now. They've tried spraying out the headphone jack, still no luck. I've got a Genius Bar appointment at 5:50PM. I'll let you all know what's going on when I'm done with them.

This happened to me on my original iPhone and the issue was that I unplugged my headphones when the phone was in sleep mode (i.e., screen shut off and locked). What I had to do was plug the headphones in and unplug them when the screen was on.

However, maybe your issue is more complicated than that but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Koolio27: Already been done. Multiple times. That's what the Apple CSR told me to do, and still had nothing.

Double post, sorry guys!

Went to the Apple Store, they couldn't fix it, so they did what any resonable company would do and replaced it with a new one free of charge :-D
