Just one iMac question

Im in 10th grade and I need a new computer all my teachers are telling me to go with the dell saying vista is great, and windows is needed for some of my classes they say. But im really like the iMac.

Would the mac be ok . All im goin to use it for it to type papers , browse the internet, youtube, and email

Also does the iMac have a dvd, and cd burner built in?

At this point and time you really can't go wrong getting ANY Intel Mac. First you get the greatness of using the Mac operating system and you get the elegance of an aesthetically cool machine. Lastly There's no issues if you need to use Windows software. You can simply install Windows via Apple's Bootcamp utility. Schools usually provide low cost copies of Windows for students.
You should be able to do everything school-wise on the Mac OS X side however should you need to use certain Windows apps make sure they work well with Vista. I just don't trust buying Vista for apps that you really depend on, it's best to use XP but use it only for your apps and stay off the web, XP is unsafe, use the Mac OS X side for internet stuff.

Comes standard.
But on a mac it's called a "superdrive". And I agree about installing XP...don't install vista...vista has tons of software compatibility problems.

You really can't go wrong with the iMac. Anything a pc can do, a mac can do, and then some (i.e. added benefit of OS X which is not available on a PC)

I think your teachers don't know squat. Like mine did.

Back in '98 our school got rid of our Macs in favor of "State of the Art Dell Computers." Not that this is bad, but the bad thing was all our floppy disc with our word documents were thrown out. Why? The teachers said that the files won't work on the new computers...

I think what your teachers are assuming is that because your school uses Windows computers that none of your Microsoft Office files from school will work on a Mac. Total myth.

Not only is there a version of Microsoft Office for the Mac, but Apple's own iWork office suite and free ones such as NeoOffice can open MS Office files.

As for DVD burners, every aluminum iMac ships with a dual layer DVD burner built in.

All Macs have a built-in CD/DVD burner, and much easier to use through the OS utilities and the iLife apps which are included.

If you can do it without causing too much official grief, go for it.
