One question, though.

Is this a good deal/brand for RAM?? Anybody ever use this? I called the vendor (local, so it won't be shipped), and he says that only two vendors make Mac Pro memory, and this one sold is from Samsung:

4GB PC2-5300 667MHZ DDR2 240 PIN Fully Buffered DIMM KIT (Two 2GB Modules)

Part #: 4GB667FBKIT
Price: $549.00
Qty.

Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) technology is a new memory architecture that addresses the scaling needs of both capacity and bandwidth in next generation enterprise platforms. FB-DIMM technology provides significant improvement over existing DDR and DDR-2 based systems due to the high speed of it's Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB). FB-DIMM also provides the latest fail-proof technology with its CRC and ECC redundancy checking, a key requirement for today's enterprise platforms.

Specifications:

Guaranteed Compatible with MAC PRO
Memory Type: DDR2 FB-DIMM
Speed: PC5300 667MHz
Pins: 240 Gold Plated Pins
Fully Buffered: Yes
ECC: Yes
Size & Bit: 128M x 4
With Heat Spreader
Lifetime Warranty

Thats a pretty good price really for 4GB, but as the US has better Ram points of sale, hard for me to say. I'd say go for it

The price is decent: you could get 2x2GB for just under $500 from OWC, just over $600 from Crucial), but I'm a bit concerned about the term "heat spreader". It implies it's not exactly identical to what you get on OEM RAM ("heat sink"). Do you know how these "heat spreaders" look?

DMS has "Apple Approved" memory for $464, OWC and TransInt'l are priced similarly. All three offer lifetime warranties and OWC will let you trade in your OEM memory.

Althought I'm perfectly happy with the quality of Crucial RAM, their dynamic pricing turns me off from buying from them -- the price varies from visit to visit, based on your OS, browser, browse path and even what color the computer you're shopping for is.

If you doubt you will need/get more than 4-5Gb for a while, I suggest avoiding the 2Gb modules. With the 2Gb modules you will get a total of 5Gb of Ram (including the stock 1Gb), but only 2Gb of it will be quad-channel and the other 3Gb will be dual-channel  . I highly suggest going for the 4x1Gb modules as that will give you 4Gb of quad-channel and only 1Gb of dual. 5Gb is a decent amount and you can toss the stock ram and still have 4 slots left for 4 more 1Gb sticks (8Gb total quad-channel) or 4 x 2Gb sticks (12Gb quad-channel).

This way in the meantime you will have full speed ram on at least 4Gb of the 5Gb.
