I know new M2:s are around the corner if rumors are true and I know MR recommends not buying a MBP 16" M1 - BUT:
My 2019 MBP 16" is on it's last stretch with various kernel panics, fans constantly running and battery capacity tops out at 1 hour so I am in dire needs of a reliable machine.
When the MBP 16" M1 was released about a year ago I tried to get one but the order was constantly pushed into the future and in May I finally cancelled the order.

Now when I see the Swedish prices for the new M2 iPad Pros 11" I am stunned - this spring I bought an M1 iPad Pro 11" (256GB + cell) for 12490 SEK and now I see the same configuration with an M2 is 15695 SEK - an increase by over 25%. Yes, the M2 is much better than the M1 etc, etc. And yes, the SEK has lost about 30% to USD this year so that's why I am surprised to see that the price of an M1 MBP 16" is the same as 9 months ago when I actually did try to get one. I guess the M2 model won't have the same price...

I have now placed a new one for the M1 Pro with 32GB and 512 SSD. Apple says the custom configuration will be delivered in a week so I still have time to reconsider I guess.

What do you think?

I'm a big advocate for the M1 MBP even w/ the rumored spec bump to M2. In the US at least this has been an easier decision to make because the machines have been routinely discounted on AMZN, at BBY, etc. Getting the base MBP14 for $1600 USD is a fantastic deal regardless of any impending update. If you need a machine now, you need it. But I would struggle to pay for retail full a MBP right now.

Side note - I'm not sure I agree that the "M2 is much better than the M1". That's not evident IMHO on the MBA. Time will tell if the Pro/Max/Ultra M2 are "much better". My guess - they won't be. Better - yes. Much better - nah.

Thanks - glad to hear. My Mac Studio is running the workload just fine so I guess a M1 will work fine as well.

I guess it all depends. The M2 Pro/Max/Ultra-series will probably be around 20% faster on average. So if prices go up by more than 20%, the M1-series was a better deal.

Here's what I always say. You need a computer now? Buy a computer now! You don't need it but want to buy just for the feeling of having the latest and greatest or for bragging rights? Congratulations, you can now start fretting ober which refresh will drop when and how soon your purchase is "obsolete". To me it sounds like your current machine is on its deathbed and you ordered a replacement. Good for you. Don't get caught up in the "something new is just around the corner".

PS: The rate of change has also slowed a lot. The M1 is now 2 years old and the M2 is just a bit faster. Back in the 90s two years meant more than twice the processor performance. Those were differences that really mattered!

I think people over think these things.

If you have a need now, then buy now. The new M2s are not going to be revolutionary, its merely a spec update.

Given what the chatter is, there's an expected price increase along with the spec bump, so why not get a great computer today and enjoy it today. I don't think the percentage increase in performance will be worth it - just my $.02

Bad advice! There are clearly times when big technology transitions are on the horizon and buying would quickly turn into a bad decision.
Dude, last generation's computer is infinitely better than no computer! And it will get most jobs done just as well. Or are you suggesting that next time my computer breaks I stop working until the new generation is released? Lucky you if you can afford to not work for an indeterminate length of time!

The M1 Pro/Max is infinitely better than the Intel Macs that preceded it.

Especially true if you came from a 3rd-gen MBP with a 4th-gen Core i7, like me.

That's a great computer and they have been surprisingly problem free for first-year products.

The M2 will be more expensive and probably only be 10-15% faster single core and 20-30% faster in multicore so hardly an earth-shattering upgrade.

Infinitely? That must be why all Intel Macs suddenly stopped working, nobody can be productive anymore. Sarcasm aside, you don't seem to understand what it means to need a computer. Like your daily income depends on having a working computer. If you need one today you'll buy one today, and if it get's your job done today it won't cease to get your job done tomorrow just because a new one is released. Even if the old one was Intel and the new one ARM. Of course the ARM transition was more of a leap than usual, but that's mostly done now, and whether you buy an M1 or M2 MBP won't be a make or break difference.

Picked up the machine yesterday. Blazing fast and gets the job done. Only applications requiring Rosetta are Sonos Controller and gnuCash, all other are arm-native. Impressive!

I'd first open the old MBP and have a look if there is just dust blocking the fans inside. might be that after 3 years of use...
Fans constantly at high rpm is often caused by that simple reason... ;)

You can than prudently turn manually the fan and have a look at them and use a vacuum cleaner to clean the most of dust out. Then have a look at the outlet part of the cooling system, where often crumbs, dust and so on falls in...

Too late. Already enjoyed a week with the M1 and all-day battery life plus blazing performance.

I Confess to having purchased a 16“ M1 2Tb/32Gb/32 GPU - even now, as everybody knows that the M3 will hit the market 2024….

This machine will replace my MBP 15“ (Model 2015) …

And I am shure that the M1 MBP will serve me well for at least 5-6 years… 😊

M1 is still Future-Proof …

I have several M1 machines (Studio and 14" MBP) and won't replace them any time soon. The only complaint I have is the outdated HDMI port - but that's not enough to warrant spending a dime to upgrade.
