I have a 2017 Macbook (gold) 8/256 and I love the portability but it is slowing down since Catalina and battery life which was the best I have seen on a mac has also decreased, it is 2+ years old and have been used quite a bit. Slightly too small screen and it really struggles with some tasks/apps now.
Like a bunch of tabs in Safari etc.

I just ordered the M1 MBP 8/512 from Costco. They offer 90 days return if the machine turns out to have issues and on top of that 2 years warranty. I had to settle for 8GB of RAM but went with 512GB of SSD since they only offer base and 8/512 models. Noticed in the past that once you get some photos and videos loaded it quickly gets too small with 256GB, especially if i add a VM or two.
I took the jump since even though it is first gen it has two things I really care about. Battery life and speed! Seems to have a great screen and I actually like the Touch Bar and to top it off 2hours extra battery life over Air. The fan means I can play some games like Wow and do some other taxing activities without seeing any slowdown.
I use it for light video editing. Play some games, WoW, office apps. General apps and the occasional use of Xcode.

The camera could be improved but I don't use very much. Two USB ports is just fine for me. I survived on one in my Macbook.

The way i see it the M1 MBP hits the important stuff for me.
Now if they come out with an improved model would i regret it? Maybe, but it would have to be more than a nice shell and not be too expensive.
I think the next model to come out will be the top model with 4 ports etc. I don't want to pay more than the base model so for me I just got the base model with top performance.

Back in the days i bought the first gen MBA and that was a mistake it was not ready for prime time. Constant overheating.

Am I off here and making a bad choice or does my reasoning make sense?

Why the rush? I have never bought a new Mac within 6 months of launch,by which time most of the problems have been revealed and better options made available. old saying: Act in haste, repent at your leisure.

I think the following is reason enough.

it is slowing down since Catalina and battery life which was the best I have seen on a mac has also decreased, it is 2+ years old and have been used quite a bit. Slightly too small screen and it really struggles with some tasks/apps now.

I usually max out specs on anything I buy from Apple (within reason...I'm not made of money). The only time I overbought was the iPad Pro 1TB, and I haven't even reached 30% full.

Personally, I'd max it out if you can. I bought the MBP 16/1024, and it was around $2,300. I'm set for a few years at least.

I purchased the same MBP and am extremely happy with it. My daily use is very similar to yours and I love the touch bar. There will always be a newer, better, etc... on the horizon so I personally never use that as a determining factor in my purchase timing. The fan on my mine has never come on. I am coming from a 2015 MBP and this machine is crazy fast compared. Only you can decide if you made a good decision but 90 days is more than enough time to determine that so relax and enjoy your new machine.
