Just p/u week 11 MBA

i picked up a week 11 mba yesterday. fit and finish are perfect! when reading on this forum and not watching video i see about 52C.

however, watching lost on hd fullscreen has probs: mild periodic stuttering and core heat goes up to 80 and finally cools to 70 to mid/upper 60's. the stuttering began from the start (sort of hard to tell since it is periodic - maybe 30 sec apart).

simultaneously opened a macrumors forum window and my 2nd core began to shutdown - on for a sec, off for half a sec. i then changed to normal setting with lost and the core stabilized again. all of this was carried out on a flat wooden surface.

it would be useful if some of you others performed the same test. you can find the lost series on abc.com

in addition, i ran it down to 18 min power. plugged it in at ~12am and it was still amber at 6am. i'm not sure when it turned green.

help on heat-fan monitor problem

sorry to ask a maybe silly question as I am a beginner user of os.
Can I ask how can I monitor how many cores I am using and in which way can I trace down if one core is down within my MBA?

Could anyone give much better details?

pughchism: HD or SSD? SSDs seem to run hotter, from anecdotal evidence.

Also, it does take a long time to recharge, especially if you run it very low... it seems to 'trickle' charge (0.5 Amps) from 0-25% or so, and between 75-100%. From 25-75% it charges at 1.4 A. I noted this using a tool called MiniBatteryLogger, or something like that (at work and MBA is put away atm). It also seems to take longer the first few charges... a common trait in Lithium-based batteries.

jordan: I think they have the Activity Monitor open; it displays CPU history(seperate for each core) in the dock icon while running by default. I've never noted the 'core shutdown' symptoms they point out, but I'm apparently a less rigorous user than most of the macrumors' folks. As a test I set it to playing YouTube videos unplugged for awhile, and while it was using ~102% CPU (just over half on both processors) I never had one drop out, even when they were topped out on temp; but mine never got over 65C.

It's mostly from reading the various temp-related threads in this forum, and comparing to my own experiences. I'm tempted to go back to the apple store and see if they've got both models sitting out, and run a test. 8) Too bad they won't have the needed temp-monitoring apps. Why isn't hardware monitoring a standard OS feature?

I have a week 3 1.8/ 64 GB SSD and it does NOT run hot at all. Mine was perfect right out of the box,none of the issues described by others.... So I think one can safely say that it's unwise to think that ALL SSDs or ALL traditional HDs run hot.... Seems as though there are a few hot ones in each category, but not every machine has that problem.

I'd agree with this. I have a week 3 SSD and never seen a core shutdown at all. Fan will speed up running flash video, but normally it's running at minimum speed.
