Did anyone purchase the Apple Pencil with the iPad 6?

I did initially and messed with it for about 24 hours and ended up taking it back. It was helpful during the editing projects on LumaFusion but that was really the only thing I was using it for and didn’t feel it was worth the $100 price tag.

Am I wrong?

Yup, but I got the pencil used. You can find them for $50. I would never pay full price for one.

I really enjoy mine for almost everything. Sometimes, I have RAM based hiccups and a little lag using the pencil with Procreate and Notability, but otherwise it's great.

I do not miss ProMotion at all.

All I'd want is more RAM in this year's model (which I may wait on) given how this iPad satisfies almost every itch I have. I will be curious to see how it performs with my online class that is starting tomorrow.

Glad you're enjoying yours OP.

I draw on the iPads and fill out/mark up PDFs, so the pencil was quite worth it for me.

I was deciding between this and the 10.5 pro before Christmas and ended up going for the pro when I found a good deal, but I do think the 6th gen iPad is a great value. It certainly beats the heck out of other brand tablets out there.

I was replacing a first gen iPad Air which is basically the same physically as the 6th gen (which is another reason I went with the pro, for the bigger upgrade). Comparing the 10.5 to my (non laminated) Air I agree the screen differences are overstated to be honest, the pro feels a bit more solid to type on without the gap but otherwise the improvements aren’t that huge or noticeable.

Where the Pro does better I think is longevity - it has twice the ram, while the 6th gen makes do with the same 2gb introduced with the second gen Air four years ago, and thats where the 6th gen will start to age more quickly after an iOS upgrade or two down the line.

It was longevity that drive me to buy a iPad Pro 12.9 1TB for my kid who is going away to continue studies next year. I wanted to spend once, and have something that would last over four years in terms of capability, and storage.

A 2018 iPad would have met the immediate needs just fine.

I also think that the new pencil is a big step up. Many pencil 1.0 users end up with low battery. Charging the pencil through the same port as is needed to charge the iPad itself was not a smart move.

I purchaed a 6th gen to replace my 9.7” Pro, but the screen and speakers just weren’t up to par. I returned it and found an open box 10.5 pro for a heck of a deal.

I downsized from a 2015 12.9 iPad Pro to a 2018 iPad last year and use it heavily daily. Although I used my 12.9 Pro as sort of a laptop replacement, I'm able to all of that on the 2018 iPad... have been for just about year.

Performance, stability, and build quality are all great and what we have come to expect of Apple products (until that point).

As for the non-laminated screen, it is highly subjective. I have absolutely no problem with it, but some will claim that it is so distracting as to be unusable. I recommend that if you have the opportunity, see it in person.

There is rumor of an update to the model in March. If you can, hold off until then.

I think its still a good buy. I bought one and use in as my main "computer" while I'm at home. I use it mostly for browsing the web and watching youtube and media consumption. Its snappy and great for what I use it for. As others have said, there is rumor that a new model will be out alongside a new iPad mini since this model was released back in march of 2018, so you might want to wait and see

I just replaced mine with an 11” pro, but not because I was having issues with it; it’s a great device. I use my iPad as my main computing device, and I just really wanted to go back pro. But I used that 2018 pad since last spring with no issue whatsoever - great device.

Yep, I was locked in on buying the 11” pro on Black Friday since its announcement, but when I started looking at a sale price of $750 against sale price of $250 my mind started struggling. I still love the new 11” but the 6th gen iPad does everything I want currently and cost me $500 less so I’m happy with my choice.

I look at it this way. You can buy a Honda Civic for $25k or a Cadillac for $50k. They’re both ‘just cars’ and they ‘do the same thing’. Though you’ll will have entirely different day to day experiences with each one.

It’s a great buy particularly for your main uses. I agree with sracer, the laminated vs non-laminated issue is subjective. It does not bother me at all but others are turned off by it. I think that for most people the non-laminated works fine though. If the rumors of a new model are true you might want to hold off and check it out. If nothing else you may save some money on the 2018 iPad when the 2019s come out.

Yeah, I'm more of a Honda Civic person. Although to be honest, I'm not a car person at all. If it had been economically feasible and practical, I'd just use taxis or ride-sharing services all the time.

I guess you won’t notice it if you’re not comparing them side by side.

This was a concern people had who I was trying to recommend an iPad to.

That's because Apple's grass-roots marketing is effective. The non-lamination wasn't a "thing" until the Air 2 was released. Nobody had any complaints about the non-laminated screen of the Air 1 when it was the latest model. But once the Air 2 was released, the Air 1 suddenly became unacceptable.o_O

Not quite true. There were actually criticisms from owners on this forum regarding the hollow tapping noise. Also criticisms for still having 1GB RAM and 16GB entry level storage. :p

Well, side-to-side you could see an improvement so I guess it's hard to go back.

Honda Civic type person here too. Plush decor, mushy ride, and unnecessary features not missed at all. And in a few years, a $25k upgrade to the next Civic is a lot more affordable than to the next $50k Cadillac, which I'd be obligated to live with longer.

I suppose that I should've been more specific. The hollow tapping sound was a different issue. The criticisms of the 2018 iPad's non-laminated screen focus on the visible "air gap" and the display's appearance. If there are any complaints about the 2018's screen being hollow, I haven't seen them.

I was just giving a general example. ;)

In detail, paying $50,000 for a car with high end features such as premium audio, 13 speakers, 300hp, racing suspension, heated/cooled seats, or half that for an everyday car can change ones day to day life in the sense of comfort and even happiness.

My point is, do most NEED the iPad Pro? Nope, yet the higher quality screen, speed, speakers, and various other amenities do matter to some people.

Sitting in that high end car everyday on a commute or sitting in a beater can make a world of difference in ones life. To each their own of course.

Yes, I see your analogy and point of view on this. I was using the same analogy to express my opinion that the differences are not worth the cost. In my case, the luxuries provided by the high end car don't do anything for me. The same as with the Pro.

I'd also add that I would not use a Civic as an example of a beater car. It's actually quite a nice, high quality, efficient car that does everything the Cadillac does for me, at half the cost. The same with the regular iPad.

So I agree that most people don't really need a Pro but that some actually do for specific reasons.
