Just pulled my iMac out of the box

Hello,

I am going to add to the posts of new iMac openings... Yesterday was my first visit to the Apple store (I had to drive about 90 mins to get there because there aren't any stores in Maine yet). I made an appointment for my personal shopping experience and it worked out well for my purchase, however when I was talking with my "Genius" she had to go out back a couple of times to get answers to questions that I already knew (I wanted to see how much she knew about Mac... oh, and she had been working there 2 years)...Anywho, I ended up with the following:

24" 2.4 iMac 320/1GB (4GB to be added later)
Apple TV
Airport Extreme wireless base station
Final Cut Express
.Mac account and
Applecare
HP C5280 all in one printer

I got a discount added onto that because my wife works for State Farm which saved me about $250, along with not having to pay sales tax in new Hampshire that saved another $145.

To get to the important stuff - the reflect-o-screen is exactly that, but my eyes are adjusting. no dead pixels and no freezing yet. It's a pretty quiet machine with very little noise. I did not have leopard pre-installed, and I plan on putting XP and Ubuntu on my iMac for kicks and grins. I am very happy with it so far. I've turned it on and came here to post. Very excited to have a brand spanking new Mac.

I was worried about the reports of the reflective screen, but it hasn't been that bad. The only time I notice it is when it is off, or there is a really dark screen. No dead pixels or freezing on my iMac either.

Sad to say, but 8 days into my brand new iMac experience, I have come to realize that the right side of the screen had a definite color difference than the left (right side being a little yellowish almost like a tinge of the sepia effect). It became most apparent when I brought up 2 instances of Safari for the same website and the the right side doesn't look as good as a the left.

After an hour on the phone with Applecare going through the hoops of support, they decided that it needs to go back. So tomorrow, I am driving the 95 miles (one way) to my nearest Apple store in the next state to talk with a genius and get a new iMac. This is the exact reason that I wanted to boot my original purchase in the store to make sure that it would be ok.

This is my first experience with Apple directly. 1st visit to the store, 1st new machine, 1st call to Applecare, 1st return trip the mac store to see if they can make it right.
I've heard some interesting stories about how Apple really came through for one particular person, and others about how Apple has dropped the ball. I'm hopeful that I am one of the lucky ones that can get back on the forum tomorrow and tell you that Apple really pulled through for me. I will keep you posted.
 
Unfortuantly this is not so rare, but it seems to me that the C2Es don't suffer that much from the normal flaws of all the other iMacs..

Suggest you turn it on and inspect it carefully before leaving the store. Besides the obvious check for the yellow-tint problem, make sure there are no bad pixels -- an in-store pre-acceptance inspection is the ONLY way to avoid 'em.

...anyone with a "genius" tee-shirt working in a retail store ...isn't,

Update live from the Apple Store in Salem NH.... My exchange was flawless and they opened the box and tested the machine, along with me doing my own comparison tests. Everything looks great and I am happy again.!
My buddy that was with me was so impressed with the transaction, he decided to pull the trigger and buy a new iMac too!
Right now I am waiting for him to checkout...

PS... one of the demo iMacs has the same problem that my original iMac had, and others were ok.. interesting, huh?
 
Got it home and I'm installing the 4GB of RAM and Leopard. The "genius" told me that my iMac had Leopard preinstalled and said they could tell by the box markings (something to do with the actual picture of the iMac)... Well, they were wrong. It wasn't... I'll be back to let you know if everything is cool or not.:D

One of those rare cases where a company's glitch/problem actually generated an extra sale. Good for your friend! And I truly hope all goes well the new one. Let us know.

That's great they let you do that most companys wouldn't do that for a customer. Glad yours is ok.

I'm thinking of throwing my eMac out the window and purchasing a 24" iMac of my own!

Argh, my eMac gives me such a hard time!
 
So far so good... I know it's my 2nd iMac... but it's working. You know the funny thing is; Is that I would normally accept this from a Windows based machine as "status quo"... but I guess I have been spoiled in my conversion with my first experience with at 6 yr. old tiBook that worked flawlessly and still does (even though the screen gave up the ghost) with Tiger loaded on it and only 512mb of RAM... and the Emac that I bought too (company auction). Those machines led me to my iBook and eventually to my iMac that I sit in front of now. I am really having the time of my life with this (I know it sounds corny, but it's true) and I look forward to the next latest and greatest development from Apple. Ok.. ok.. I'm 40 and I've seen the light. :)

If it took you 8 days to notice this, would you have been able to notice this in the few minutes you checked it in-store?
 
8 days to finally bring it back. The Apple store is almost 100 miles (one way) from my house. Also, it took me a few days to notice the isssue and I tried doing the color calibration, etc... But what really made me want to exchange it was when I brought up 2 instances of Safari side by side. You could definitely see the color difference. You are right, I should have checked it in the store, as I did yesterday. In my post I mentioned that one of the floor models had the same issue. It's hard(er) to detect within the brightly lit store and more background movement. But since I knew what I was looking for, I could see it.
Anywho... I'm a happy camper for now :)
