Just pulled the trigger on a bunch of hardware...what do you guys think?

After literally months of researching and going back and forth, I finally put in an a few orders for hardware that will go into the refurbished 2.8Ghz Quad Mac Pro I plan to buy next week.

Here is what I ordered...

• Kingston 16GB (4 x 4GB) Mac Memory Kit
• Intel 320 Series 120GB SSD (Boot drive)
• OWC 40GB SSD (Photoshop scratch disk)
• WD Caviar Black 2TB HDD 7200RPM 32MB Cache (Storage drive)
• WD Caviar Green 3TB 5400RPM 32MB Cache (Time Machine drive for Storage drive)

Total was $880...ouch. I will be using the HDD the Mac Pro comes with as a Clone/Time Machine drive for the Boot drive and also have an external WD 2TB HDD that I will use as a Clone for the Storage drive.

Was kind of confused on the Boot drive size...thought maybe I went too big and could have sufficed with an 80GB but I took a look at the current Applications folder (20GB), the VMWare folder (16GB) and the User folder (67GB without iPhoto file) so that's 103GB already...pretty high on the User folder but I browsed through it and I have at least 25GB I can clean up, so I should end up with 78GB used out of 120GB, leaving me some breathing room.

Sounds good, although you probably overpaid for the RAM. Any "for Mac" kits are overpriced usually. OWC sells 16GB for the Pro for $265, not sure what you paid.

Paid $275 for the Kingston from Newegg...pretty close but would have ordered from OWC had I known, didn't even look at their site at RAM when I ordered the SSD>

Gotcha. $10 isn't too bad. Sometimes it's $25 or 30, which is why I mentioned it.

Well...just changed my order.

OWC actually had the RAM for $260 if you use Amazon check out so a $15 difference. I cancelled the Newegg order and placed the order through OWC...$15 is $15 right? Thanks for the heads up.

I take OWC makes good memory, right? No problems compared to Kingston?

OWC doesn't manufacture the memory they sell, but it does work.

NF IS CORRECT OWC RELABELS the ram . but they give good service and are quick to replace it if it goes bad. www.superbiiz.com has 4 sticks of 4gb for about 200. I use them but they are a bit slower to replace bad ram and have a shorter warranty. So you pay one way or another ..

Thanks for the suggestion but the 120GB is already pushing my budget at $220, I was originally planning on the 80GB for $180.

yeah I have a 300gb but I want a 600gb just too much coin. I have to say the 300gb is flawless.
