i found a 1.83 ghz CD w/ superdrive and 80 gb HD. at only $479 how could i say no? i'm pretty excited. this will be my second mac. it should go nicely with my 2.4 SR MBP. i'm planning to connect it to my TV in my living room and use it as a media hub.

so i'm wondering if its possible to connect it to an external hard drive and share files from it over my network. i looked at apple's tutorial for file sharing and it seemed to say that the files that you want to share need to be in your public folder. so my question is there any way to get around having the files on the internal HD of the mini?

Nice. Did you get that from the Apple refurb store?

You can definitely connect an external HD to the mini. You can even load OS X onto an external and boot from there. Not sure about the exact functionality you seek beyond that, but that will get your files off the mini's internal HD, and will give you much more space for your stored media (and, if you're booting from the external, your public folder will reside there, as well).

the mini is a sweet machine...enjoy! :apple:

When you setup sharing, files don't need to be in the public folder.

You'll be able to access the entire hard drive from the other system.

im in the same situation as you... bought my first mac in july... a 2.4 SR MBP, ..... best computer i have ever owned, i barley justified spending all the money on it that i did, but now after owning it for a bit i kick myself for not going to mac sooner...

i have a 32" lcd tv, i was thinking about getting a mini and getting a DVI to HDMI converter for the best picture

... You can have any files shared to the whole network, as all my pc's in my house can access all files on my MBP with no problem... also a good use for the mini would be to hook your printer to it and share it on the network, make it a media hub / print server / file storage.....

... you can even use the external HDD on your mac mini as your download directory for your torrents, so you can play the videos you download directly off of your mini with your mac remote...

.. anyways enough rambling, i just want to pick one up myself :)

Nice, I just got my Mini a week ago. And I haven't turned it off since. I use it as a media server connected to an external, only problem now is that I have to get another external :)

I use a program called share points.....google it...

it lets you share whatever files you want....on whatever drive

I got my Mini the other day and it's been amazing. I definetly need to get more RAM though; but I can wait on that. Great little machines and I love how quiet it is. :)
