Just purchased an iMac; trade-in options?

Because of a work-related obligation, I absolutely had to purchase an iMac two days ago. When I made the purchase, I was aware that an iMac refresh was imminent. I have 15 days from the date of purchase to trade it in; assuming Apple releases a new iMac next Tuesday, I will be within my 15-day window.

If I can take advantage of the trade-in option, I will probably get the 2011 iMac. But I am wondering whether others have purchased Apple products so close to a refresh and gotten other benefits. An obvious one to me would be to ask Apple for a gift card equivalent to the post-refresh discount. Anyone on this forum have any thoughts about that?

Any other ideas for compensation from Apple?

You have 30 days - you can go back on the 30th day and ask for a refund, they will give you a full refund (no restocking fees), no questions asked. So, if the iMacs do get refreshed in the next few days (which is most likely), take it back and exchange it

You have up to 14 days to return (not 30).

If Apple does put out a new model within 14 days of your purchase, they will issue a refund of the difference in price if you contact them.

days to return depends on the country you are in. In the U.S. it's 14.

Now I'm confused

I bought my iMac 12 days ago, so the refresh next week will be over 14 days. Is there a separate rule for an exchange? Just curious about the above "30 day" comment.

I wasn't entirely clear in my original post. I am wondering whether Apple might offer a gift card, small rebate, etc., in lieu taking my current iMac back and issuing me a full refund.

For an amount equivalent to the post-refresh markdown price difference of my model, I might be willing to accept a small rebate or a gift card. Does anyone know if Apple makes such offers?

From Apple's return policy:

"Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 14 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 calendar days of the price change."

Now, that does not mean for sure that they will give you a refund as the new ones won't really have a price difference. But you can always ask nicely. Apple has excellent customer service.

Once Apple refreshes its product line, the previous model ceases to exist. So there is no "markdown price". And I've never heard of them offering a gift card to offset such a "price drop."

EDIT: There was the original iPhone price drop when they gave all previous purchasers a gift card, but that was a pretty unique circumstance where the price dropped about 3 months after the product was released.

They have a great program where you return the computer you just bought and buy it back when the price goes down after the reboot
