Hello everyone... I dropped my 3.5 year old Titanium Powerbook several months ago causing the monitor backlight to break (yes, well done, I know). Since a laptop isn't that useful if you have to use it with an external monitor, I finally ordered a 2 GHz 15.4" Macbook Pro last week, and...
Holy crap is this thing hot!! Whenever you do research on a product, you're always going to find some unhappy customers, and of course they're the ones who are most likely to complain. Plus, well, people in general like to complain about things, so I didn't put too much stock into the heat gripes in the forums. But my overriding opinion of my new laptop is just how unbelievable hot this thing is.
Yes, it's very fast. And though I was unsure of my decision to go with the glossy screen (I went to CompUSA 3 times wavering)... I absolutely love it. No reflection problems whatsoever and the colors look fantastic.
Anyhow... as I mentioned though, my overriding opinion is that this thing is just too damn hot. I'm not just talking about the bottom of the case here. If you inadvertently touch the metal above the function keys on the keyboard, you'll jump back as you'll get yourself a nice burn. I mean, I'm not talking warm here, the other posters aren't exaggerating when they say you can cook something on this thing. Basically, you have to use the computer on a desk... but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a portable computer?
I've read about the thermal paste potential fix, but come on, I've just spent $2000 on a laptap, and I have no intention of opening it up and re-engineering it. This is ridiculous! So, though I looked forward to transferring all my files over and playing with my new computer, I have to admit I'm quite disappointed. Doubt I will return it, but I'm unfortunately just not that thrilled with my new machine, as I thought I would be.
Oh, as for the other issues, no whining or mooing or meowing or anything else. It's a week 26 machine for those who are interested...
