Hello everyone... I dropped my 3.5 year old Titanium Powerbook several months ago causing the monitor backlight to break (yes, well done, I know). Since a laptop isn't that useful if you have to use it with an external monitor, I finally ordered a 2 GHz 15.4" Macbook Pro last week, and...

Holy crap is this thing hot!! Whenever you do research on a product, you're always going to find some unhappy customers, and of course they're the ones who are most likely to complain. Plus, well, people in general like to complain about things, so I didn't put too much stock into the heat gripes in the forums. But my overriding opinion of my new laptop is just how unbelievable hot this thing is.

Yes, it's very fast. And though I was unsure of my decision to go with the glossy screen (I went to CompUSA 3 times wavering)... I absolutely love it. No reflection problems whatsoever and the colors look fantastic.

Anyhow... as I mentioned though, my overriding opinion is that this thing is just too damn hot. I'm not just talking about the bottom of the case here. If you inadvertently touch the metal above the function keys on the keyboard, you'll jump back as you'll get yourself a nice burn. I mean, I'm not talking warm here, the other posters aren't exaggerating when they say you can cook something on this thing. Basically, you have to use the computer on a desk... but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a portable computer?

I've read about the thermal paste potential fix, but come on, I've just spent $2000 on a laptap, and I have no intention of opening it up and re-engineering it. This is ridiculous! So, though I looked forward to transferring all my files over and playing with my new computer, I have to admit I'm quite disappointed. Doubt I will return it, but I'm unfortunately just not that thrilled with my new machine, as I thought I would be.

Oh, as for the other issues, no whining or mooing or meowing or anything else. It's a week 26 machine for those who are interested...

Finally I have arrived.....
There is a widget from Apple site, which tells you about the temp and other hard ware stats on the Mac. Can you post the CPU temp? My PPC PBs and iBook are from 42 degree C to 58 degree C (mostly around 45 to 52 range).

Sure... I've been running between 58 and 68 C, though under very low load, as I haven't had a chance to do much beyond mail and safari yet. There's a site (http://www.intelmactemp.com/list) that has compiled a bunch of temperatures. Mine seems to fall well within the range, so I would say my machine is no more "defective" than anyone elses.

In my old Powerbook, the battery on the bottom felt just as hot as the bottom of this one... the main difference is that that was the only hot portion of the case. On my new Macbook Pro, the entire case is hot, thankfully with the exception of the portion below the keyboard around the trackpad where I have to rest my hands. But the speaker (at least the left one) is very hot, as is the area above the function keys. You'd almost want to use oven mitts to move it to another room in the house.

The odd thing (at least to me) is that I don't feel any hot air coming out of the back vent (and no, it's not blocked). It just seems like the case doesn't release any of the heat... I've read some posts where people say the machine gets better as it's worn in (and presumable you get more accustomed to it too), so hopefully that is the case with this one as well...

I have a question. What in the world happened to the vents on the bottom corners of the laptop. My PB had vents on each side of the bottom corner of the computer, but when I got my macbook pro they are gone. Why would they get rid of those on a computer that runs this hot?

and on top of that i think where they put the one vent on mbp's is pretty much the dumbest place possible. i bet in about a year there will be defects with the screens towards the bottom from all the heat that goes out right there.

They must have needed the space for something else, that's the only stab I can take at it. If you crack your book open you'll notice that everything's pretty well jammed in there, not a lot of extra space to do much of anything with.

Sorry to hear your MBP is running too hot for your liking :(

Eventually there WILL be a firmware update to reduce the heat. Don't swetat it:D hehehe get it! I'm funny.

I doubt so, it is not like thermal paste has EEPROM modules in them nowadays.. even those used by Apple

So... I'm not brave enough to reapply the thermal paste... and I think I'll just go with the ilap/coolpad approach to vent the laptop to reduce the heat (and protect my poor lap)... does anyone have any product recommendations? Thanks!

If your MacBook Pro runs hot you might consider taking it back to Apple to get it looked at, I have 1 here and it sits on about 35'C-45'C in normal use and will get up to 70'C with both cores running at 100% but even then the case is only hot on the bottom, at the moment my machine is cold to the touch.

The MacBook / MacBook Pro lottery continues on!

sad but true... some people luck out and get flawless machines while some of us have multiple issues (or one serious one in this case). :(

I'm hoping the newest release of the MBP will fix some of the heat issues (please apple, just apply the thermal paste CORRECTLY). I'll let you guys know how mine runs when I get it in august. Maybe apple will add those small side vents again or something. I don't need the functionality of cooking breakfast while I check my email.

I'm glad you got one! I can't wait to get mine. Only a month or so....I've been waiting to purchase one since it's release back towards the beginning of the year.
