Amongst all the threads of issues plaguing Macbook Pros, I'm sure it has discouraged many potential buyers (including me). There was a thread a couple pages back about Macbook Pros arriving all right (as opposed to not all right) but I figured I'd start a new one.
I ordered a 15" 2.4GHz with the 160GB 7200RPM drive on Sunday night and received it around 2:00 today (Friday). When I received it I booted it up quickly to check the screen for dead pixels, stuck pixels, the yellowing issue, checked the keyboard and trackpad, and then installed the 4GB of RAM I purchased separately from Crucial (only $199, great buy).
Here's the lowdown:
- Matte Screen, it's flawless. It's a bit blue overall, but that's probably just to the color profile. No yellowing, no greenish tint, no dead or stuck pixels.
- I've had it on for about two hours just messing around in Tiger and Installing Leopard. I haven't checked the actual temperatures yet but it doesn't seem to be running hot at all.
- Screen lid is not warped, ie when the lid is closed it sits evenly flush with the base (I remember some people mentioning that their screens weren't sitting flush with the base)
- The trackpad does pop up towards the top a little bit, which is unfortunate but a very minor quip. It's not very noticeable at all.
- I installed the 4GB of RAM and it works perfectly.
- The Leopard Drop-In disc did tell me that I need Tiger on the computer to install, but let me do an Erase & Install, which is still going now (it's taken about an hour and currently has 7 minutes remaining).
All in all, I am very impressed with how quickly I got the computer and that all of the kinks seem to have been ironed out of the Macbook Pros.
In conclusion, buy away! I was concerned but my fears have been eased.
