Just Relocated to Korea~ What computer???

Hello ya'll,

My company has relocated me to S. Korea... In the US I use to use an Ibook, and a PC computer... For the PC I use to have a 20.1 Inch Wide Dell Monitor... I didn't feel like lugging the PC over, so I just brought over the monitor, thinking I would get a new system in Korea...

Now that I"m here I don't know what to get... I need the pooter to do a few things:

1. Surf web - alot of Korean websites are not accessible through Mac.. such as banking services
2. World of Warcraft...

I don't think the new mini would fit my needs... and the Imac would make my monitor kinda useless...

Do I have to go PC????
 
Actually, I think that you should go with a new iMac Core Duo. You can still use Mac OS X and connect your Dell LCD to the iMac (use as a second display).

So no, you do not have to go to PeeCee jonomo. :)
 
actually, you could get an ibook, powerbook, or MBP as a portable and use the monitor as an external display while at home. If you go the ibook or powerbook route, you could use virtual PC with internet explorer or firefox to get some of the korean sites otherwise unaccessible with a mac. but just pick whatever you think would be more beneficial, because i kno that i like desktops, but being able to take them with you in the form of a notebook is just that much sweeter. :D

Another good alternative solution as lonelemur90 has pointed out, would be to go with a MacBook Pro.
 
I have some experience living in S. Korea.

If you are gonna stay there more than a few year, then you definitely need PC.

Believe me.. if you want to do internet banking, online shop, or about anything that you can do online (korean site that is),
you NEED PC.

That's because almost all Korean website and services use Active-X thingy...

Well.. as long as you stay there for brief moment, Apple would be fine.. but if you will be staying there for longer than 2 years, want to learn Korean,... or travel in S. Korea, you need PC.

Also I know one bank that provides online banking service for Mac.

but in order to use that, you gotta go to international in system preference and drag Korean on very top of the list.

Uhmm the macbook pro does seem like a good idea... however, I do like mobility... so if they come out with the 12inch... or even better the 13 inch wide version.. I think i'll upgrade my ibook to that...

And as suggested I can use Virtual PC to do some of the banking and such... which is what one of my cowerkerz does... we convinced him to get the new Imac... hehe..

By the way.. anyone have any ideas as to when the smaller macbook pro may come out??? i hear rumors of a 13 inch ibook, ya think the macbook pro will also go 13???
 
hmm... this is just me guessing, but i doubt the MBP will go to a 13 inch option since the 15 inch powerbook was apple's most popular seller, but it is still very possible for a 13 inch ibook (macbook). Personally, im hoping they offer the ibook intel replacements in both core duo and core solo configs similar to what they did with the mac minis. The only thing pushing me away from the hopefully soon-to-come macbooks is that they are expected to be only core solo.:( The hope of more affordable core duos and the airport extreme issues that some macbook pro owners are experiencing are the 2 things preventing me from running out to the apple store now to pick up a macbook pro.
 
in all honesty, get a PC.
from my 2 weeks in korea and dealing with korean people alll the time, that entire country is like one huge microsoft-adoring crowd. besides, prices for Macs in korea are outrageous and depending on your length of stay, you might want to take advantage of any warranty a computer might come with.

Besides, prices for PCs and PC parts were pretty decent over there..

Feel free to get a Mac and hack away at it to run XP though. I still honestly think a PC would be cheaper and better in your situation, unless somehow the price of a Mac mini or any other Mac purchased here + shipping is cheaper than getting a PC that won't need to rely on any hack to run XP.

(btw vpc doesn't run on any of the Intel macs, so...unless you're buying PPC..)
 
My wife and I are Korean (living in US) and we view some Korean websites from time-to-time.

Although increasing number of Korean websites support (or will soon support) Mac now (at least on Firefox/Camino), the sad reality is, most Koreans use Windows and Internet Explorer. As others have pointed out, due to reliance of ActiveX (and Koreans love websites with background music and streaming video) and IE-optimized HTML coding, you basically need Windows with IE to view many websites. Which is too bad... Korean fonts on Mac is vastly superior to Windows.

The new about the Parallel software is very good. I can probably run virtual PC or whatever version comes out for the Mac...

Virtual PC for intel Macs is not available. There doesn't seem to be a time table for that yet. I would bet that we would get reliable, dual-booting X / XP before Microsoft gets VPC working on intelMacs.

Buy a MacBook Pro. Tomorrow.

...you'll thank me later. ;)

P.S. All portable macs now have GLOBAL coverage for their complimentary 1yr warranties AND AppleCare. MacBook Pro prices from Apple Store Korea are too steep (you'll pay in won about USD$2450+ (not including VAT) for the lower end MBP). Insane.

..just get a relative or friend to pick one up for you and ship it over to you in Korea.

Have fun over there. The food is amazing!
 
Where in S. Korea??

I spent a year in Seoul and Chuncheon in 2001 and 2002 and absolutely loved it. My highlight was a trip to Seoraksan in fall for the changing of the color of the trees and leaves.
