After my Oly C-750 was stolen right out of my car (at church, no less), insurance covered it for the original price I paid ($550). So I have been yearning for an 8MP cam, and I knew I couldn't afford an SLR. I checked around and found that eBay had a great selection, and after losing 11 auctions, I won a Nikon Coolpix 8800 for only $525. Nikon still lists the MSRP at $999, with a $100 rebate to $899-- so I was impressed.

Anyone else have this cam, or an 8700?
You can see some of my newer shots here (sorry for the dA links :()

Very very nice, I wish I had a camera that good and the skills to get pictures like that. I hav enever seen the Coolpix 8800, but I will have to look it up later. Very very nice pictures that it takes, and of course that takes skill!

I'm not familiar with that model, but DSLR kits have been dropping in price. For the past few days, dealmac had the Olympus Evolt E300 DSLR with lens for about $600. I don't mean to make you regret your purchase, but just know that DSLRs aren't super-expensive anymore. =)

I don't know about the camera, at all, sorry. I just wanted to say those photos are fantastic, especially the fire and the two with the kids.

Yes, I know about both the 8700 and the 8800, as I've got both. I bought the 8800 almost immediately after it came on the market because it did some things that the 8700 didn't do and it had the threaded lens so that filters could be added (which is possible, but very awkward, on the 8700).

Actually, using the 8800 is what finally kicked me into going into a DSLR. The 8800 is capable of some beautiful work -- your images are a good example of that -- but it can also be frustrating, depending upon the situation. I eventually arrived at the conclusion that it just wasn't the camera for me and for my shooting style, so I moved on to the D70.

I enjoyed seeing your images -- that one with the smoke behind the school is a stunner, and I also very much like the architectural shot with all the angles. You've got a good eye for composition! I hope that one day you, too, will be moving on to a DSLR, as I think you could really benefit from the versatility that one offers.

thanks, guys, for all the comments and compliments.
I do plan on getting a DSLR someday, but as I said, my funds are limited- the body I could afford, but lenses add up.

However, I did enter a student photography contest with Nikon that ends in Febraury, and the prize is a D70s with lenses and $1000 cash. :D THAT would be nice.

The Coolpix 8800 isn't a bad camera. I considered the 8700 at one point because I've been more comfortable with Olympus' ZLR IS series cameras but having a full SLR again made me happier. Having an Olympus SLR again feels just right.

the pics are really good! ! ! but your handle reminds me seenew.com, which is owned by nokia doing a photography competition, however, all works need to be done by a camera phone! ! ! but if you have a camera phone, with your skills, and more to do with your 'loyalty' to seenew (apparently is what Nokia use for their new phone N90), i believe you have a good chance to win the competition! ! !
