Hi,

I've got 17.7.2 installed and am constantly asked to "upgrade" to 18.1.1. I don't want to do that so I've turned off Automatic Updates but I'm still being bugged about it. Can someone explain how to stop these upgrade notifications?

You can't. And if you insist on not upgrading, eventually the dialogs will attempt to trick you into pressing the wrong button and therefore upgrading.

The only thing you can do is ride it out. Once you get past a few versions or an entire upgrade the nags eventually stop.

Thank you for preventing me from further wasting my time in the settings section! As you can tell (iphone XS) I'm not all that committed to new tech, but can you share a perspective to counter my reluctance to go to 18? In my brief researching I seem to remember many folks not happy about that version, but I'm open to hearing other perspectives (beyond simply doing it just for security).

Usual internet rules work on things like this for me....folk who arent happy will shout about it on the internet while folk who are happy generally dont go out of their way to say it on the internet. Think about how many iPhones are out there and how many will be on the latest version...there will be a lot more happy iOS18 users than those not happy its just you dont really hear from them.

I'm also still using an XS (for another day or two, anyway*). The big issue I have since upgrading to 18 (and now 18.1.1) is the podcast app is using tremendous amount of power and running the battery down faster than usual. Maybe it is just me, but this happened in the past with one of the upgrades, experienced by others, and subsequently was corrected. Maybe 18.2 will fix it. I'm curious to see if that is the case.

FWIW, I always upgrade the OS to get the new features, and work around, or tolerate and wait out, any issues. The real concern for me would be not falling behind on security updates. In that sense, if you are happy with what you have and if Apple is still updating 17, then probably don't worry about upgrading to 18. Just my opinion.

* I have a 16 Pro on the way. Even if 18.2 fixes the podcast app issue, I know it is only a matter of time so far as battery health. I'd rather switch now than have the battery crap the bed at the worst possible time.

I hear you on this but I rely on reading many (conflicting) views when it comes to things like upgrading because it's not one of the things I want to be super-knowlegable about; I'll try to make an informed opinion and then move on until the next "big thing" arrives. Reading the extremes on either end provides me with a decent sense of where the middle is.

Good advice. I'll probably wait until 17 no longer gets security upgrades.

Select the Developer iOS/iPadOS 17 beta in Settings»General»Software Update»Beta Updates - and be not bothered again. 🤓

Before you retire that XS, can you do a small favor, and check how much storage 18 requires (Settings/General/iPhone Storage/iOS (size at the bottom of list)?

17.7.2 consumes 10GB on my XS, and I have no problems sticking with it until the phone is retired, but updates have apparently reached the end of the line (17.7.3 doesn't appear as an update option), and if 18 consumes more of what little free space is left on my phone, I'd like to know what I'm getting into beforehand.

Thank you. To update, it appears I'd have to clear off another GB of stuff.

I already am aware that 17 consumes almost every bit of the 4GB RAM in usage.

The XS had a good run, but all good things come to an end.

Yes. I sure got my money's worth from mine.

Me as well. Bought used (in great shape) and still does just what's it's supposed to. Will lament the day I have to put it down.

Mine still does. But I've had a couple recent instances where Face ID failed to function, and required putting it to sleep and trying again. It wasn't one of those periodic instances where the passcode entry is required to unlock. Face ID just didn't work. Anomalies, or the early signs of a hardware failure (which I've never had on an iPhone before)?

I like the iPhone 16 models, but am trying to hold out for the 17 and the second generation of what an AI phone embodies, according to Apple.

Not because I necessarily buy into those features, but because it will be a more polished model. Much like the XS was a refined version of the X, which introduced a lot of new things to the table, and ended up receiving longer support.

I was planning to hold out for the 17, but the issue I was seeing with the Podcast app and battery drain focused my mind. And I decided I didn't want to push it for another year or so. As I said earlier, I want to upgrade on my schedule, not forced by crisis.

And to add to my earlier response to the OP, 18.2 doesn't seem to have fixed the heavy power use by the podcast app. I deleted the app after I upgraded and the reinstalled it, to see if that would do anything, and so far it doesn't seem to have helped, but it may be too early to know for sure.
