It started with an iPod, as it does for so many. The gateway drug! Then my desktop PC was replaced by a 2.53 MBP with 512meg video card. The wireless router quickly fell to 1TB Time Capsule superiority.

And now, finally, after years of being a Blackberry user, I have a 16gig 3GS.

I own a small business with a partner, and I must say, Mac's have been very good for running almost all aspects. And the iPhone, while only a few days old, is quickly proving to be a powerhouse for business applications (as well as the occasional game).

However, at the risk of being flamed, there were some things the Blackberry did better, or else I just haven't figured out how to do the setup on my iPhone.

Is there a way to have "profiles" like on a blackberry, where if I set it to quiet, all noises go to a certain level? Is there a way to set up different sounds for incoming emails from different accounts, and can the volume be set at one level for email, and another for phone? Can noises for everything but an incoming call be turned off?

Finally, and I know some will laugh or say it's not necessary, but for me, I really miss having an LED tell me when I missed a call, or when a new email came in. With the iPhone, even turning on a locked screen doesn't display this info, I actually have to unlock the phone.

Obviously there is no way to add an LED, but is it hypothetically possible (or does it exist) where an app can be created to turn a small corner of the screen into a pseudo LED that will stay lit when an email, or missed call, is on record?

All that to say, loving my Mac transition! Can't wait to see what is next!

Thanks all.

Unfortunately I've to answer "no, that's not possible" on both questions. Maybe it wil be available in a future update of iPhone OS.

Those are some things I miss about the blackberry.

And^ the OS has nothing to do with LEDs ;) that's hardware related.

I think what he meant was the possibility of having a small corner of the LCD screen simulate an LED, and stay on when the rest of the screen is off.

That's too bad.

Oh well, still pretty darn happy with the purchase. My bb was failing so I couldn't wait for whatever the next iPhone will be.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, I know you were saying you were ideally looking for an LED, but if I have a missed call or any Text Messages and I turn on a locked screen I will have "*Name* Missed Call" or "X Missed Calls" or "*Name* Text Message" etc. etc. Admitedly there is nothing for email and you have to unlock for that. I've not modified my iPhone in any way... It's always done this? Or am I totally misunderstanding you?

No no, you understand perfectly. I guess because I am not a text message user, just emails, I have not noticed that.

Hmm, I will have to look again on missed calls. It's possible that I have not actually missed one yet, and looked at a locked screen! I may have just assumed based on emails.

You know what they say when you assume...!

Jailbreaking offers some solutions to your needs, there are a few different profile creators like 'mirror profile' and an alternate alert system called GriP.

With GriP you can set emails, push notification and sms (needs plug-in) etc to appear as much smaller stickies, that can be viewed on the lock screen and can be set to stay untill you tap them. These alerts include a scrolling preview and launch on tap functions.

This solution is your best bet. I use GriP myself and it is awesome. Works as expected with no major issues. You can also choose where you want it to display on your screen.

While that does sound useful, I'm not sure jail breaking is for me. I'll have to read a little more about it.

If you have any questions about jailbreaking, let us know. I for one am definitely for it. The iPhone is a whole other phone when jailbroken. I not only have lock screen notifications but also multitasking now.
