Just updated 7 (!) apps. 45 minutes later...

First of all, 7 apps? I check for updates daily and have never had more than 2. Was Apple sitting on these? Could it have anything to do with the release of 2.1?

I really hope iTunes 8 reworks the app updating and installation methods. 45 minutes to install a few megabytes of code is just plain ridic. And no, I am not talking about a backup...I have backups turned off. And I was installing via USB, not OTA.

Apple could really learn something from Installer/Cydia. The entire time I was jailbroken on my 1st gen iPhone, the longest install for an app was *maybe* 2 minutes.

Installing flippin' LEOPARD didn't take 45 minutes for crying out loud!
 
The more apps you have installed, the longer it takes to install/update ... I'm up to 19 minutes per app. That's right - NINETEEN.

It's ridiculous. I'm to the point I deleted apps I'd like to keep but deleted to make everything quicker.
 
Is this server related? My iPhone is in terrible shape attempting to update four apps. Problem is it was taking so long I tried to go into the AppStore and I got the ALoD! I'm so furious right now.
 
I just got 3 updates (Koi Pond, What's On, and something else I don't remember) and it only took about 3 minutes to do the update.
 
after my first ALOD, i don't do mass updates anymore. i will only update one or two apps, then sync. then update another one or two apps, then sync again. if it's one massive app that has a large file size, i'll only do the one app.

i wouldn't suggest doing mass updates of more than a few apps, or mixing large apps with others.

that's what i did tonight for 7 app updates. updated everything in 4 batches.
 
Just a few days before my iPhone crashed and needed a recover, I noticed installing PapiJump over wifi directly on the iPhone took like 15 minutes to install, it was ridiculous. The app is only 0.1mb, while a 1.4gig Star Wars Unleashed demo installed quicker on my PS3.

I don't think its sever related. Downloading Apps is really fast (depending upon your internet connection). Individual apps for me take about 10-15 minutes to install. It seems to copy the app to the phone quickly but then just hangs at the end for a long period of time. Very annoying.

Yes, it's quite ridiculous that it takes 19 minutes to process less than 100KB of data.
 
19 minutes? Wow. That's no good. I've never timed my updates, but have noticed they are a bit longer. With the update all at once gone, that would be tedious!

Hmm. On Vista, I downloaded the install file from Apple, as the check update in iTunes still said 7 was current. I was worried, I just did the install from the downloaded file and it worked. When I opened 8, it regenerated all my ablum covers, and finally the applications area was showing all updates to be done. So mine were not missing.

What happens if you go to the "Store" menu at the top and choose check for all downloads or all purchases?

Last night, I updated some apps. Took a bazillion hours.

When I get in my car going to work, I click the iPod icon. It tells me there are no songs on the iPhone. Plug it up tonight and all the music stuff is checked just like before. I'm now trying to uninstall a bunch of apps and it takes 18 minutes to uninstall instead of the 19 to install. Big improvement.

This update has got to fix this. I doubt I'll buy another darn app until this is fixed. It's an 8GB device. The transfer of 8GB over a USB cable takes maybe a minute. Somehow, updating a 1MB application takes an hour. I just don't get it.

You guys will be happy to know that 2.1 fixed this!

I have 56 apps installed on my iPod touch, and after upgrading to 2.1 I sync'd, updating three apps and installing two new ones. It took less than five minutes to sync! Then, just for the heck of it, I updated another app directly on the iPod. That took about a minute. ONE minute. ;)

OK, I'm impressed.

I just switched from syncing selected apps to syncing all, just to test how long it would take. I went from:

Apps: 57 --> 73
Size: 1.06GB --> 1.22GB

Time spent: 8 minutes.

Wow, this is LIGHT YEARS faster than 2.0.X ...

edit: this just keeps getting better. I just deleted all the new apps, and that took less than two minutes. TWO MINUTES!!!! This is shockingly good.

that only checks for music and video downloads..I was reading on the apple forums where people lost everything on their phone from the new itunes..im scared to connect my phone to the computer..

Hmm, strange. The reason I mentioned it was because iTunes told me to. After I updated to version 8, I noticed I had 7-8 application updates. The update all button was finally back, so I used it, but nothing happened. The second time it gave me some message that I already purchased or downloaded these before and blah blah, then a second window saying to go to store and check for purchases, which doesn't exist except for check for downloads.


Damn, iTunes 8 is still screwy. My iPhone showed I had two updates, Bloomberg and Aurora Feint. I go to iTunes instead, checked for updates, it says I have some, but it only shows Aurora Feint, yet the applications name on the left and the section say there are two updates. Why the hell is it not showing the Bloomberg update. Edit, I just left the apps update area, went back into it, now it shows it. Stupid thing, I hope it won't be as unreliable before where it never showed an app update, sometimes only until the app had a 2nd update.
 
This is what I don't understand, but comes up now whenever I do updates with iTunes 8:

What's annoying is it doesn't bring that message up every time. First after click update all, then update all in the next pop-up, it then does nothing. It looks like the progress bar is doing something, but it stops. I just wasted half an hour to backup and sync my iphone, disconnected it, and found it hadn't updated those two apps. Now I have to do another backup.

But basically, I tried the download all button again, which now it brought up the window shown above. Which when you click ok, it auto checked for purchases and started downloading them. Why the heck did it not do that the first time.
